“Gavin!” I shook him for the third time. “Gavin wake up!”
“Ugh… Hayden I’m trying to sleep.”
“You need to get up. We have to go meet the girls.” Gavin groaned and rolled out of the bed.
“Why do we need to do this at night?”
“It’s a witch thing and a full moon tonight so that makes it even better. Besides midnight is a witching hour and gives us more power.” Gavin dragged himself over to his dresser and got dressed. After grabbing his book bag we headed out to our spot. Our beach. Or that’s what I’m calling it. So far were the only people who use the small space and the best part about it is it’s secluded. “So are you going to tell me about the calling goddess spell?” Gavin shrugged
“Not much to tell. We light a few candles, call out a together. Do you know anything about this pixie spell where doing?”
“Nope, Lily was working on it.”
“How’s it going? Between you and Lily?”
“Sigh. Not much really. She’s been busy and we haven’t been able to hang out like we used to.”
“That sucks man.”
“What about you? Interested in anyone?”
“Yeah maybe.”
“Is it Meli?”
“No! Why do you think that?”
“You guys where spending a lot of time together.”
“We were just working on the spell… I’m kind of interested in Cara.” I nodded
“She is beautiful.” We walked in silence until we reached a bush that was close to the beach. We could see the girls, they had already built a fire. They stood around in white cloaks that covered them from head to toe. The hoods covered their faces. Lily wore her three moon pendant, Cara wore a crystal necklace that had two red rubies inside of it. Meli wore a strange necklace, it looked like copper circled around an eye, different colored crystals hung from it.
“Good you’re here.” Lily said making me realize we had walked onto the beach. She handed each of us our own cloaks to put on. “Undress and put these on. Then go see Meli she has a pendant for you.” Before I could ask her any questions she took off, walking over to Cara. Gavin and I walked into the woods to change.
“Dude… why do we have to get naked.” I asked Gavin.
“Why would I know? I’m just doing what Lily told us to do.”
“You helped write the spell.”
“Getting naked and putting on girly robes was not part of my spell.”
“So this is all Lily than?” when we finished changing we walked back out onto the beach and over to Cara. She handed Gavin a pendant that had a star in the middle of it with eight stones circling it. Each stone was half black and half white. It looks like the phases of the moon. The one she handed me was all silver and in the shape of a cross, four blue stones were placed on it. One for each of the sides and one in the middle. I pulled the chain over my head and set the cross so it laid in the middle of my chest. “Cara can you tell us what’s going on.”
“Where going to do the calling of the pixies spell than call the mother goddess. Lily will explain before we start.” I looked over at Lily, she was throwing herbs into the fire. I watched as the fire grew and changed from orange to blue to purple and then stopped at green. Meli handed each of us a piece of paper with a spell written on it.
“One moment than will disrobe and sing the spell.” Everything was moving in slow motion. Cara turned on a cd player, a tune of flutes and strings played in the air. Lily called us together to stand around the fire. In unison we raised our hands to the ties of the cloaks at our necks. The cloaks fell to the ground, a white puddle at our feet. Stretching out our arms in front of us we started our chant.
“Pixies come dance with me.” We started dancing to the music. Circling around the fire. “Pixies come be with me. Great mother come dance with us tonight with us your children and fairy folk. Fairies show yourself true. Do not fear me, I am your friend, you’re family. Invite me into your world and dance.” We danced to the tune of the music that played. Small glowing lights began to appear. “Pixies, great mother come dance with me. Be with me. Please show yourself to me. We will protect you as we dance. We dance the fairy dance.” A white light shined around Cara. Big beautiful wings appeared on her back. The glowing lights turned into little, winged, dancing people. A red light appeared in the middle of our circle. The light shifted, moving and turning into a tall pregnant, beautiful women. Dressed in a white gown she danced with us. She skipped and stepped so lightly on her toes. She threw her arms out wide and turned in a circle. As the music slowly came to a stop so did the pregnant women. When she stopped dancing she rested her hand on her swollen belly and stood before us.
“My children.” She said and raised her hands to us. “Why have you called upon me this night?” Meli walked up to our mother and bowed.
“My Mother Goddess. The Dark Goddess is here. She will gain her power on all hallows eve. How do we stop her?” The Goddess laid her hand on Meli’s head.
“My child. My children.” She raised her arms to us again. “Time has come. My sister has awoken. You six are the chosen ones.” She looked over us. “Wait one of you is missing. The sixth one chosen one. You need all six of you to defeat my sister.”
“My Goddess how do we defeat her?” I asked her. She walked over to me and slid her fingers through my hair.
“I cannot tell you how to stop her. That is something you will have to figure out on your own.”
“How did you stop her before?” Gavin asked. The Goddess looked over and me and gave him a soft smile.
“Sadly I cannot curse her again. It was a one time spell that I could only do in my crown form. If I could curse her again it wouldn’t stop her, it would only put her off for another thousand years.” She started to walk around the fire. She tossed something into it. We watched as the fire turned white and expanded. “I can show you the future.” We saw ourselves in the fire. Standing side by side we fought against the dark goddess. Fighting took place around us, spells and people dying. The six of us held hands and a bright light shone from us. That’s when the fire turned black and then went back to normal. “You five must find your sixth and you will be unstoppable… I must go now. Talk to the fairy folk, get them on your side.” She looked over at Cara and smiled. “It looks to me like you have them already.” A blue smoke started to circle around her and she was gone. We all looked over at Cara. She stood before us surrounded by the pixies, huge wings shone from her back. I elbowed Gavin in the side.
“So you have the host for a fairy.” He gave me a look that could curdle milk. He walked over to Cara
“Ah Cara. How is it that you’re a fairy?” Cara cupped a pixie in her hands and held it close to her.
“I’m only half fairy. Fairies have many different talents and gifts. There is also many different types of us.” She took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. “My father is a sprigging fairy. He was running with horses when he met my mother. She’s a witch by blood. As a sprigging my father has the ability to grow to human size. So he grew to his human size and fell in love with my mother. They married and I was born, half witch, half fairy. My fairy powers are stronger. I can make flowers grow, move water, fly. My parents sent me to Cerridwen Danu to learn about my witch side.” Lily walked over to Cara and wrapped her arms around her in a big hug.
“I’m glad you told us. We need to get the fairies on our side to help us fight in this war.” Cara ran her fingers over the Pixie she held in her hands.
“We need to go to the green house and talk to the garden pixies. We need to get them to contact their cousins the water fairies. If we can win them over will have all of them behind us.” I walked over to Lily and put an arm around her.
“Let’s do that tomorrow. It’s late and where all tired, let’s say good night and head to bed.” Lily agreed, still skyclad we circled the fire.
“Fairy’s and Great Mother, we leave you now. Hide, go back from wince you came. Be not sad. Don’t cry for we shall return. Be at piece. As I say so mote it be.” With that the fire went out in a puff of smoke. We donned our clothing and headed back to the school. When Gavin and I got back to our rooms I asked him
“Do you still like Cara now that you know her secret?” Gavin shrugged
“Yes, I have no problem with her being half fairy. I grew up with a bunch of different halfies.”
“What do you mean? How many half witches are there?” Gavin sat down on his bed and thought for a second while I changed.
“Well there’s half fairy, half fish, half wolf, half bear, tiger, lion and so on.” He scratched his head. I couldn’t believe it.
“How many half animals are here?”
“None, they tend to keep to themselves and live in packs, so there mostly home schooled. There is a school is Scotland for half animals…”
“How do you know so much about them?”
“My step sister is half wolf.”
“Wow, I had no idea there were people like that out there.” Gavin shook his head.
“Dude you so need to learn more about our side of the world.”
“Okay, what do you mean by our side of the world?”
“Cara could probably explain this better but the magical world is kept hidden from the human or mortal world. Yeah you can find shops and books of our kind in the mortal world but the people of our world tend to hide their magical side from mortals. They don’t usually react well to other being different so we hang out with our own kind.”
“I should probably go to the library and do some research on us Hugh.” I said to Gavin as I climbed into bed. Gavin got under his own sheets, with a snap of his fingers the lights were out and we were surrounded in darkness. Time passed as I lay in bed dead tired yet unable to fall asleep. All the things I learned today bounced around in my head. What else is out there? What else don’t I know? What more can I learn? I kicked my sheets off of me and spread out on the bed, hooking my right thumb in the band of my boxers and putting my left hand under my head I thought about the fairy’s and mermaids, beautiful wolves. Closing my eyes visions of Lily, naked and dancing around the fire filled my mind. Her arms swayed with her as she spun, dipped and moved with the music. Her long black hair moved around her body, the fire lit up her skin. Lily danced in my head driving me crazy yet relaxing me at the same time. I don’t remember falling asleep but when I opened my eyes it was morning and I was more rested than I ever have been before. Since its Sunday and we don’t have any classes I decided to call Lily. We haven’t hung out just the two of us in a while and I miss her. Since coming to this school we’ve made new friends and found out more about ourselves but we haven’t really had the chance to be alone together. Pulling my phone out of my pocket when I finished dressing I dialed her number.
