Mommy always told me

"Look under your bed for monsters"

But Mommy is silly

The monsters are the ones outside

Shooting the guns I've only read about

Facing bombs I've only heard outside my bedroom window

On the third floor of what some would call

An apartment complex

I called it my tower

Where I could watch over my kingdom

Even as it went up in flames

When the red spilled on the streets

I could see the stain

The next day

When I used to go to school

Mommy says it isn't safe anymore

To go out there

But Mommy is silly
