I stared at the slightly crumpled note, momentarily stunned." Peter! We got a match!" came a voice from behind me. The voice may have been close to me but I barely could hear it, it was like my head was submerged in water, like I was drowning in my own thoughts.
Separated from the outside world.
I shook my head. So, Peter was his name, that was all I could really hear before I got lost in thought. Turning sharply around, I caught sight of a youthful young man with several pieces of papers in his hand, about to hand it to Peter.
Have I heard his name before? No, can't be him.
He is already dead.
I saw it with my own eyes.
I shook that thought off. " This brand is magnum, it's a brand new shoe brand, introduced just last month."
Which means she was there last then a month ago or just a few days ago for the footprint to be there.
"Hey, Lauren. You know you don't have to stay here, you can go off. We don't need you right now." said Peter.
I nodded. That place just made me feel safe, just a little bit. I walked out of the police station, both my hand tugged around each other, helping to keep me warm in this unforgiving cold winter day. The bright cheery sun was out, but I couldn't feel its wrath upon the earth.
It was just staring at me, mockingly.
I strolled around the city. The streets were buzzing with activity, which I tried to stay as far away from as I could. I stole furtive glances of my surroundings, so many buildings I had never noticed. So many people with different lives, while I'm in the shadows, living only but a broken one. I put my hands in my pockets and faced to cold, hard ground, hiding my potential tears that might just stream out of my eyes at any moment.
If only I could enjoy life like everyone else. If only I could live and lead a simple life like everyone else. If only I could be happy and not be guilty of all my sins. Well, I can't. This shall be my debt. I can't live a happy life without her.
She deserved one.
Not a low life like me.
