Most people are very disappointed to see that the entity doesn’t turn up in the movie and are wondering what the virus is. My interpretation of the virus is that the infection actually comes at night, not a Insidious style demon.
But if you feel like a monster would be more suitable to the plot of this film, go ahead. My version of the events is not what you have to agree on. This is just me providing an explanation to people who don’t have an idea of what the point of this movie is.
The way your eyes go black slowly when you are infected means that scientifically you are a nocturnal creature. You would only be able to see properly at night. The film focuses heavily on Travis’s dreams, I believe this is the way the virus works. You go roaming at night in the early stages of infection. As seen with Travis, having nightmares. When Andrew is found one the floor of Grandad’s room, Paul immediately asks if he sleepwalks. I believe that Andrew being on the floor was real. But before that event of infection, we need to talk about the door. Who opened it?
I feel like I need to say, this might not be what Trey wanted when he filmed this. The movie is definitely meant for people to make their own interpretation. Sort of like a choose your own adventure book, you make the story out of the events laid down in this film. Sure the boundaries for what story you can craft out of this. But I definitely appreciated the ambiguity made in this movie. But feel free to create your own version of the events. As this is not a set in stone interpretation.
Paul is quick to point the finger at Andrew, and the film wants to lead you the way of “Andrew opened the door”. As Paul says that Andrew was the only one up. But, Travis was up as well. Paul quickly dismisses this fact. He opened the door, because he knew the dog was on the other side. He then proceeded to kill the dog himself, in his infected rage, before walking back to Andrew. The film seems to heavily support this. As when Andrew is asked why he was in Grandad’s room, he replies with ‘I don’t know’. It is well known that Andrew was infected, as he was told to keep his eyes closed by Will. Travis’s response to all the questions about the door is the same as Andrew. This then leads to the full scale gun fight toward the climactic ending. But what if when Travis led Andrew back to his room, that was when Andrew got infected. Not the other way round like the community believes.
