I awoke, drenched in sweat, as I gripped my bed sheets as if my dear life depended on it.
I couldn't get his face out of my head. His terrified screams as the Hunters caught up to him. As people he knew and loved blockaded his only escape route. His silent plea for me to help him.
But how could I? What was I to do? Summon a bolt of lightning and pray that it struck one of the men? I'm only so strong and I have little experience with my ability.
So I watched.
Watched as they took him, watched as he begged for his life. Watched as they took the blade, that horrific scythe, silver and gleaming, and beheaded him as if he were no more than an animal.
I listened as his own family cheered at his demise.
It made me sick to my stomach.
How could someone be so cruel? He'd done absolutely nothing wrong.
He was ten years old. He used his ability to grow a red rose for a girl he liked and she screamed.
Screamed bloody murder that he was "one of those filthy things." A Kinetic. The hunt began. And what could he do to defend himself with an ability like Florakinesis? Absolutely nothing.
I wanted to help him. He was my former friend's brother. He knew about me the same way I knew about him. I'd tried to warn him, but he always wanted to impress others. And it got him killed.
Panting at the memory I looked at my alarm clock. Two thirty-seven AM. However, I knew that I wouldn't be getting anymore sleep tonight. So instead I went into my small kitchenette for a snack.
I currently live in the off campus dorms across the street from my University. My roommate was also a kinetic.
I first discovered this when I caught him burning his hand with a white blaze.
~~
I walked past my roommate's open bedroom door and gasped loudly and watched as he looked up at me, the colour draining from his face.
He quickly extinguished the flame.
"Y-you don't understand, I swear." He whispered, fear swimming across his eyes. I put on my best disgusted face and whispered "Monster" and watched in amusement as fat tears began rolling down his face.
"Please, y-you have t-to u-understand, it isn't what you think!"
Keep in mind that this man is 6'2" and is so muscular, he looks like he's been lifting everyday since he came out of the womb. Seeing him cry was, honestly, the highlight of my week.
My facade broke as a small grin cracked on my face.
His face quickly switched from despair and fear to confusion as I doubled over, laughing hysterically and clutching my sides.
He then looked at me with realization on his face as I rested my hands on my knees, my fit of laughter nearly over. I looked at him, still chuckling slightly, "Calm down bud, it was a joke." I wiped a stray tear away as he looked at me, slightly angry.
"I nearly had a heart attack! Why would you do that!?" He said, his face slightly red from embarrassment yet filled with relief.
I gave him a small smile and said smugly "It's fun to fuck with your own, right?"
"What?" He murmured, disbelief coating his face.
Instead of answering his question I simply looked at his window, concentrating, my eyes glazed over, as grey clouds suddenly rolled into view.
Looking back, it probably wasn't the best idea, seeing as it was currently extremely sunny, and, I'm sure, many people figured out what was going on fairly quickly. Not to mention the eye of the storm was always directly overhead the summoner. But you know what they say, hindsight is always 20/20.
A light tapping was heard on the window as the rain began.
I then raised my arm towards the sky and quickly drew it into my side and watched as the rain suddenly pelted down in harsh sheets. The first clap of thunder was heard as the storm took on half it's full potential.
I then brought my hand into a fist, my eyes beginning to water at the sheer concentration it took to send a storm of that strength away and watched as the storm evaporated into nothingness. Bringing back the sunny day.
I smiled at him and he looked at me in awe.
"You're a Kinetic too?"
I nodded.
"Holy shit dude, how do you find the time to practice that?"
I looked at him puzzled, "Practice? I almost passed out just trying to get the damned thing to go away." However I knew that was a lie.
Ever since the boy's death I'd told myself that I would practice, as often as possible, so that I could one day defend those I love.
But some things aren't meant to be told.
So instead, we both chuckled at my commentary.
"So what exactly is that?" He asked, nodding his head towards the window, where the storm had previously been, the tension in the room now gone completely.
"Atmokinesis. And yours?" I asked.
I'd only ever knowingly met two other Kinetics before, Jaxon, the Florakinetic, and my best female friend of seven years, Adria, she was an Odynokinetic. She could manipulate pain, although she'd yet to figure out how to ease pain, she could only deal it. Which could be very helpful at times, but she refused to use it.
However, needless to say, I wasn't familiar with very many abilities. At least not their formal names.
"Sancti Pyrokinesis, I manipulate Holy Fire, very pure, if i work hard enough, I could resurrect the dead. the flame of the gods." He chuckled "What's your name?" He questioned, the same interested look on his face.
"Skylar, Skylar Evans. You?"
He smiled at me, "Shaun Miller."

A smile graced my lips at the memory. Ever since, for 3 years now, he, Adria, and I had been joined at the hip, inseparable.
I walked over to his room and knocked at his door to see if he was awake. He always kept the fruit snacks under his bed.
"Hey man, you up?" I asked, to which he responded with a groan.
I was really hungry so I simply walked in and grabbed the fruit snacks, not feeling all too patient. However I instantly regretted my decision once I looked on his bed and realized he was not alone.
He had some blonde girl from our Literature class cuddling with him.
It wasn't a rare occurrence for him to bring home girls and screw them. He was known to be a player and, unfortunately for me, it was a rather hot night. So he decided to leave the blankets under him, leaving him completely exposed. I blushed profusely, extremely embarrassed and scurried out of the room.
Some things you just can't unsee.
I walked to our living area and flipped on the TV. I turned over to the XBox, hoping to binge watch Supernatural for the rest of the night.
Don't get me wrong, I'm super straight, but Jensen Ackles will always be my man crush.
I stayed up until about six AM watching Supernatural when I heard Shaun try to sneak his little friend out of the house.
"Have fun bro?" I asked just as he opened the door.
"Dammit," he whispered "Never let me slide, huh?"
"Not a day in Heaven or Hell" I said laughing.
I let him finish his business with the girl and walked over to our patio door, that led out to the terrace.
I lived in Columbus Ohio. It was honestly beautiful during sunrise. Especially from our view. My mom was an extremely successful real estate lawyer, so I got to have very nice things.
I was looking out of the patio door when I saw it.
The small, agile figure dashing through the streets, being chased by three men.
Anyone watching knew exactly what was happening right now. A Hunt.
They weren't rare, but not exactly common either. It was the type of thing you'd watch from your windows, so that you didn't seem too invested.
Typically, I'd shut the drapes.
Normally, I'd turn away and try to forget what was happening to that person, to my people. But I knew instantly who that person was.
Her long dark hair chasing after her in the breeze.
I turned towards Shaun. My heart rate increasing.
"They're hunting her" I whispered, fear and shock lacing my voice. I turned around and was met with confused eyes. "What?" he asked tilting his head slightly to the side.
I ran towards the front door. "Adria, three men were chasing her." I said, not sparing him a second glance.
With a gasp, he soon tailed me and we both both dashed out of the complex doors and into the streets of Columbus, and to our very probable death.
