I grabbed Adria by the arm and began pulling her away from the streets. I could hear the sirens approaching.
Not normal police sirens, but the sirens of a UPAK Squad. United Protectors Against Kinetics.
Dangerous does not even begin to describe these fuckers. They are only called during extremely high times of distress and are more deadly than anything you could think of.
Every single last member is recruited at age three by parents who are willing to give their child to the force. They are immediately given a test to make sure they aren't a kinetic, and then trained vigorously throughout their childhood to ensure their strength. They never leave camp grounds, and are worked harder than a man in the mines.
And all before age 5. That's only the joke shit.
No the real shit is so fucking hard and unreal, that it's fucking classified. No one outside of that facility knows what's going on inside. But I'm sure it's fucking metal. And that's only if they survive the fucking first stage.
These bastards are bred to kill.
And they were coming for us.
I could barely see through the fog, but I saw the instant panic and fear across Shaun's face.
"Run." he said in the most panicked and calm expression I'd ever seen.
We began making a mad sprint through the streets of Columbus. I knew we needed to find cover as soon as possible, but I also knew that there is no such fucking thing as decent cover in a city like this.
I wanted to just blend in with the crowd, but fucking Adria was still acting like some rabid animal and was actually snarling at this point.
I was holding her bridal style, but I was getting tired from running myself and I knew she was slowing us down. And it isn't like her literally fighting my every move was not helping.
I stopped behind a relatively large building and pushed her against it.
"Adria, I love you dearly, but this is one hundred percent necessary."
I cock my fist back and punch her in the stomach, hard. I know she's going to kick my ass for it later, but I can't afford to waste time worrying about that.
She falls to her knees and coughs a bit, then looks up. She feels her face and is still unable to remove the shirt. I help her untie it and look at her eyes. they've returned to their natural hazelnut colour and she is panting and drooling a bit.
She seems exhausted.
"This," she says with a twinge of annoyance hidden in her voice "is why I don't use my abilities."
"Well you might not have that outlook for too much longer." Shaun said, finally having caught his breath. "They've got PAK's on our ass now."
Adria visibly pales, every competent living being knows about UPAK, and knows not to fuck with them. Kinetics fear them more than probably anything.
"Where are we gonna go?" She says with a hopeless look on her face.
"We're hopig to find a for-"
Our conversation is cut short by the low squeal of the UPAK Siren. It's much closer now.
"As much as I love chatting with you two. We got to go, like now." Shaun says, his voice a slightly higher pitch.
I Want to make a smartass comment but the sirens are only growing louder. My fog has completely dissipated without me focusing on it, leaving us exposed, and vulnerable.
The three of us begin running in the opposite direction of the sirens. Hoping to get away from them as quickly as imaginable.
We run fast and hard, panting all the way.
I look back at my friends, Adria looks like she might be sick at any given moment.
There has to be some kind of forestry or trees around here somewhere. I think, desperate for a way out.
If we could just find some trees. I'd make a whirlwind and throw them off course or something-
And then, there's a violent gust of wind, then silence.
And we're suddenly in a forest just on the outskirts of the city, but Shaun doesn't realize and smacks directly into a tree.
He lets out a low shout of pain "Dude what the fuck" he says, holding his forehead as he sits on the ground, "Maybe a warning."
"I didn't do that" I argue, just as confused.
"Didn't realize Adria and I could control wind, sorry" Shaun retorts with a roll of his eyes and stands.
I look at my hands.
That's the thing about Kinetics, we never know when a new branch of our abilities will show up. It's always random and always dangerous.
It's so easy to be caught with random bursts of powers.
"Who the hell cares, The UPAK isn't chasing us for the moment and we're safe. Now will you please make that storm already?" She says looking directly at me.
Something doesn't quite sit right about what she said, but I disregard it and sit, cross legged, on the ground.
I look at the city, the forest is on a hill, giving us a perfect view of the skyline.
Focusing all my energy, all my thoughts, to the storm.
"Get down, and stay near me." I know they'll be safest next to me, since I'm the eye of the storm.
I close my eyes, and completely let go. And suddenly, I'm floating over Columbus in a sort of, astral projected state.
I look down and see all the lights, the fast paced streets.
And it breaks my heart.
People I grew up with, people I never thought could hurt me. Yet here we are.
I start it with a light sprinkle in the direct center and let it spread across the whole, feeling the storm brew within me. I contain it a little while longer, letting it grow, stronger still. And when I feel as though I'll burst from holding it in, I release it.
And all hell breaks loose.
Heavy raindrops fly to the ground, coming down in waves. I know there will be casualties, but they didn't care about the casualties when they beheaded my kind.
When they beheaded Jaxon.
At that thought. I lose control. My eyes shoot open, but I'm still high above Columbus. I glare at the city beneath me, and the rain comes down faster, harder.
The winds shake trees and buildings, makes cars fly away. I thrust my right hand towards the left side of Columbus hail the size of grapefruit begin to fall. I flip my left hand, sending it it into a twisting motion, summoning a small cyclone to rip through a small area in the city. I can only hope the damage is minimal.
Then, I take my hands and thrust them both the ground directly beneath me and a siphon of wind is sent barreling to a small company, sending the building toppling down.
I see a UPAK truck, blaring its horns in search of the eye. I focus all of my energy and send a lightning bolt towards it, but it just barely misses and only manages to knock it off the road.
Suddenly, there's a sharp pain in the back of my head.
"Ah!" I scream, and suddenly I'm back in the forest, holding the sore area. Shaun is standing above me with his hands in fists and an enraged look on his face.
"What the fuck dude?!" I shout at him.
"Dude, you were fucking destroying the city! Can't you see that's the reason they attack us in the first place!"
I look at the damage I've done, I frown.
"They wanted a war." Adria says with a smirk
It's so strange, I only wanted to send a small cyclone, and shake up the UPAK troops. But I just, I saw Jaxon. And even still, he's never affected me like that, I mean, it was distressing, but I barely knew the kid.
"I'm sorry, I didn't even realize what was happening." I say and look to the ground.
My entire life, I've stayed hidden. And now, here I am, destroying cities.
"Don't stress it" Adria comments with a shrug. "Come on, if we walk a bit further, I think I can get us to my Uncle's, he can help us."
I stand and look at the back of Adria's head as she guides us. Something is so wrong about her attitude, she's normally so quiet, but now? She seems, ruthless.
I brush it off, we have bigger things to worry about. So, I take a deep breath and follow her.
I look back at my old home. "No turning back now" I whisper.
