As I stood on the stage of the Lumiere D'argent Theater, also known as the Silver Light Theater, I knew that my moments there were numbered. The clock was slowly counting down and my energy was draining with every passing second.
I'm not going to make it. I thought as I moved my paintbrush across the once white canvas. The theater was silent save for the beautiful piano music that filled it. People watched as I painted as rough as the music would play and as gently as the music would slow. It was a wonderful feeling as the melody my partner played move my hand, creating peace, love, happiness...life.
Damn! The strength in my hand faltered and I fumbled the brush. Hold it together, you got this. My body rejected my thoughts and just as it has been when I walked on stage, I began to bend over more in pain. He's almost done. The song is ending. We're almost done!
My partner, Kaiden, began to do the outro of the song and I began to apply the final touches of the painting. I struggled to keep my eyes open and my body straight as I entered the final stage of the piece. From my peripheral vision, I saw Kaiden glance at me and put on a slight frown. Suddenly, to my dismay, he finished the song two measures early, causing my mind and body to automatically skip over a few processes of the outcome.
What the hell is he doing? I stopped painting as the music faded to an end and just like all the other times we performed together, he stood and walked over to turn the painting around for the crowd to see. The canvas was filled with my vision of what the song looked like.
It was a hidden lake in Autumn. Huge oak trees surrounded the calm rippling water. In the center of the lake was a little girl in a white dress alone in a rowboat, watching the orange, red, and pink leaves fall. However, off to the side out of her sight was a young boy wearing blue, staring at the girl lovingly.
"This painting is called 'If Only You Noticed'," I announced loud enough for the theater to hear. The people sitting in the seats stood up and clapped loudly as both Kaiden and I took a bow. As quickly as possible, I began to put away my paint brushes and paint in the smock that I was wearing as the light came back on and the Silver Light began to empty.
"Evelyn," Kaiden said as he watched me grab the painting and jump off the stage. "Hold on!" he grabbed the score he played from the grand piano and hurried after me. I painfully made my way out the main theater doors into the gloomy and wet atmosphere of Paris. "Evelyn, what's wrong with you?"
"We need to hurry back to the studio," I replied as I headed to the parking lot, keeping the painting turned upside down to keep it safe from the rain. A sharp pain expanded throughout my stomach and I had to stop and bend over, groaning loudly.
"Is it..." Kaiden didn't finish his question. I nodded my head and he helped me to his car, making sure the painting was safe in the backseat. He hurried to the driver's side and rushed us into the dying traffic. I wrapped my arms around my stomach as it felt like someone was ripping away at my insides. "We're almost there. It's okay. Just breath." Kaiden said as he maneuvered through the rain.
Heavy dark clouds covered the sky, leaving no signs of sunshine to come. The rain beat down upon the car, shrouding the windshield in a distorted mask. Around us, a loud thunderclap sounded like a bomb exploded, shaking the car and making my heart skip a beat. In the sky in front of us, a thick bright lightning bolt flashed in the sky and right behind it was another blast of thunder.
Finally, Kaiden pulled into the driveway of the studio building and jumped out of the car, rushing over to help me out. He opened the door and instantly, my hair was tousled by the powerful wind that blew across the city. Through narrowed eyes, we navigated our way to the door of the studio. Kaiden fumbled with the keys a bit before he was able to unlock the door and get us inside. With a sigh of relief, Kaiden helped me to the couch in the living room before running to the bathroom. My breathing was labored as the pain flowed from my stomach to my head to my back and shoulders, leaving them tight and strained.
"Kaiden," I groaned loudly before grunting.
"I'm coming!" he said as he came back into the living room with a blanket and towels. He took one more trip to the bathroom before coming back with a ben of hot water.
"Where's the medicine?" I asked as he dipped a towel in the bucket, drained it, and handed it to me. I lifted my shirt and placed the towel on my belly. Almost instantly, the heat soothed the pain and I was able to breathe in relief before it sparked up again.
"I didn't see it in the bathroom," he replied as he grabbed the towel, repeated the process, and gave it back to me.
"Did you check the cabinet?" I asked with a frown. He blinked before standing and headed back to the bathroom.
"What does the bottle say again?" his voice echoed to the living room.
"Menstridol!" I replied. My cramps were always terrible when it got to this time of the month. Especially during a performance.
"Um...I think you're out of them," he replied coming back to the room with the bottle of pain reliever in his hand. I held my hand out for it and shook the bottle.
Empty.
