When the Snow Falls

Evelyn

Evelyn

Mar 30, 2018

"No," I groaned as I tossed the bottle onto the floor. "Kaiden-"

"I know," he said with a worried look. "I know how much you need them but..." he looked out the window, taking in the storm that seemed to be ripping the city apart. "Can anything else help? We have some Tylenol and Advil."

"Please, no Kaiden. You know that doesn't help me" I stood up and dropped the towel back into the water before fixing my shirt. "Please, we have to go. It's just a little rain."

"A little rain!" he gestured to the window. "It looks like God is trying to wipe us all from the planet again! Look, that was someone's trash bin that just rolled by!"

"Kaiden, please," I begged as I went for the keys to the car. He came to my side and took them from my hand.

"Are you serious right now, Evelyn?" he asked. The look I gave him made him groan. "Please, don't be serious."

"Kaiden," I groaned again. He growled in frustration. He took the hair tie from around his wrist and put his black hair in a big puffball before opening the door. The wind rushed in along with a shower of rain. It was gray and dark and the road was clear save for the water that made it look like a small river was in front of our studio.

"This is crazy," He muttered as we closed the door and rushed to the car. We got in, soaking wet and breathing hard as he started the car and did his best to back out. "We're only going to the corner store."

"But I don't think that store has it," I said as I buckled up and watched as the sky lit up once again with lightning. He glanced over at me with a deep frown of annoyance. "Kaiden."

"Stop saying my name!" he said as he drove slowly through the rain. "I get it. We'll go to the Monoprix." Once he said that the car was silent. We listened to the sound of the rain pound the top of the car as we made our way through the streets. After a while, I was starting to get bored, so I turned on the radio.

"Should stay inside. I'll say it again. There will be a lightning curtain in the next 20 seconds. Everyone should stay inside their homes while this storm is happening. If you are currently on the road, stop your car immediately and put your heads-"

"What the hell is that?" Kaiden gasped as he stomped on the brakes. I looked in front of us and my eyes widened as a wall of lightning strikes appeared down the road. Not even two seconds later, it happened again, getting closer to the car. "Shit, Evelyn, put your heㅡ"

CRACK!

I was shocked as a lightning bolt crashed into the hood of the car. The entire car jolted, causing my head to slam against the window. After that, I wasn't sure what happened. My head was pounding, there were loud noises around me and Kaiden was calling my name.

"Evelyn!" I felt him shaking my arm and I turned to look at him in pain. It seemed like the entire city became dark. I couldn't see a thing.

"Kaiden, it's dark," I said, reaching my hand out until I felt his spongy hair. I patted until I placed my hand on his shoulder. "Did the lightning strike take out the lights?"

"What are you talking about?" Kaiden asked over the loud thunder and rain. "It's dark, but not that dark."

"It's pitch black!" I said incredulously. "How is it not that dark? I can't see you at all!" I turned my head, but I couldn't see a thing.

"Evelyn..." he didn't say anything for a while. "What can you see?"

"I just told you it's pitch black," I replied, slightly annoyed. The pain I felt on the side of my head mixed with the cramps was unbearable. "I can't see anything. Can you see?"

"I can see just fine..." he grabbed my hand and held it in his. "Evelyn...did you put your head down during the lightning curtain?"

"...I...no..." I replied, thinking back to the beautiful bright light that struck the car.

"No way..." Kaiden said as I felt him shift back. He gave my hand a squeeze. "Evelyn..."

"What's wrong?" I asked. I was highly confused. And it was so dark.

"...I think..." he stopped talking, letting the sound of the storm once again take his place.

"What," I said, blinking my eyes.

"I think...the lightning may have blinded you."
