The house was alarmingly huge. I found that I had my own room with an attached bathroom and a spacious walk-in closet. It was already decorated like something you would expect from a magical fairy-tale. The walls were covered in ivy and all kinds of woodland scenery, the floor somehow looked and felt like grass (which was surprisingly soft and not at all itchy) but wasn’t, I asked...or well, I had looked at Mrs. Cara questioningly and she responded with a -“ Oh, darling it isn’t real I assure you!” The bed had a canopy made to look like the night sky and the mattress itself (bed-frame and all) was extremely large and overbearing, black silk covered everything. I just sat down with a ‘fwump’ and a slightly tired sigh before letting myself drift into a dreamless sleep. When I opened my eyes I was shocked to find the girl from before hovering over my face. I jumped up, accidentally smacking my head on her’s. “Ouch! Watch it…God just…ugh! Don’t get comfortable, you won’t be here long. I’m sure that mother will see that you’re not one of us and you’ll be on your way to wherever it is that people like you go...anyway, dinner’s ready.” I sit there puzzled for a moment before I decide to catch up with Reah, otherwise I’d end up getting lost trying to find the kitchen on my own. Once we arrived I nearly gasped out loud at the sight of the huge dinning hall. It was like something you only hear about when you watch those reality TV shows about the rich and famous…The dinning hall was spacious and had delicate looking chandeliers with antique wallpaper covered in gold foil and floral designs. The table was long and made of the most expensive mahogany carved with symbols that meant nothing to me, though I could swear some of them were glowing. On the table were cornucopias filled to the brim with real fruits and vegetables that gleamed like jewels, all surrounded by a full course meal of all the most expensive dishes that I had ever had the pleasure of knowing and many that I didn’t know. “ Don’t just stand there with your mouth open, come on…eat.” I jump as Mrs. Cara comes out of the shadows to my right. I didn’t hear her at all, I think feeling a bit skittish. I stay stiff and ready to bolt until she moves to a safer distance, then I slowly slide into my seat. “ Now, let the feasting commence!” I wait until everyone starts to pass food before I fill up my plate.

‘I’m so full I could burst, I’ve never been so stuffed in my life!’ I roll around in bed for a while trying to get used to the feeling. ‘ I’ll be 17 tomorrow, one more year and I can be free of everyone. I just need to keep my head down and save any money that comes my way, I’m sure there are places willing to hire a 17 year-old…but, for the time being I’ll take full advantage of Mrs. Cara’s kindness. I sigh in contentment before getting myself ready for bed, once I’m finished with my bedtime routine I get under my new silk blankets and tried to get comfortable. Not long after I settled in I begin hearing strange sounds outside my door. I get up and crack the door; peeking down the hall I relax when I don’t see anything out of the ordinary. ‘Oh, good…it was nothing.’ I breathe an internal sigh of relief before turning around and heading back to bed, after laying down and getting comfortable again I drift into the dreamworld. I was holding a woman’s hand as she rushed us down an alleyway, “Listen to me Rhy, you have to be a good girl and stay here alright? Mommy has to go somewhere and I can’t take you with me. I’ll make sure that your Aunt Rosaline comes to get you, you’ll be fine.” I feel tears slip silently down my face, but I nod vigorously to make my mother proud. “Good, good…Rhy is mummy’s brave girl, we’ll get through this…” She runs her hands through my hair and kisses my forehead. After wiping tears from both of our eyes she gathers herself and places me inside a trash bin lining the brick walls of what I assume was a restaurant. My mother stands and after looking at me once more she darts off down the street. Not long after I hear voices screaming ‘Catch her, find the abomination!’ once they all faded away, I lift myself out of the trash and sit patiently for my aunt. When she finally arrived we stared at each other then she suddenly turned away as though she couldn’t stand the sight of me. I was miserable from then on.
