She looked up at the stars. They seemed to wink at her, like they knew something she didn’t. And as she stared at these… these giant balls of gas, she realized she didn’t want to know. She remembered being a kid, how she took that big cardboard box, how she imagined she was flying, that she was touching the stars. She remembered being happy. She looked down, at the road below. It seemed to be miles and miles away. With her eyes starting to water, she watched the cars drive by. Way up here, she couldn’t hear the traffic, she couldn’t hear anything. Way up here, she realized it was a long way down. She closed her eyes, tears rolling down her face. She imagined the stars surrounding her. She imagined how limitless she felt in that cardboard rocket ship. She imagined being happy. She imagined another way to get there. She stepped away from the ledge.
