The group drove for about thirty minutes in total silence,Kara did not understand why Aiden suddenly asked them to move, but whatever the reason might have been it would surely have been justified.
"So we never had the chance to speak and socialise properly and since we are going to travel together,I think that socialisation would help us all to understand each other" Kara said, her voice was dry so she grabbed a bottle of water and gulped down while hoping that her request wouldn't go unanswered.
"My real name is Aiden Rasputin.....that's all" Aiden said while driving,he didn't even take his eyes off the road, but somehow his affirmation left mixed feelings among the others since no one expected him to speak or share at all and on the other hand they had already figured out that he wasn't some ordinary man,so him having an alias wasn't that shocking.
"As you all know Julienne and I came all the way from France,I'm a physician,I just finished this year and was finally hoping to get a good month of pure resting" Joan then sighed.
"Tha-" Kara's body jerked forward before she could complete her sentence and hit her face at the back of the driver's seat "Don't you know how to drive?" she said while slowly regaining balance on her knees and poking her head to the front seats in order to look at Aiden and maybe slap him silly for his nasty driving. But what was taking place before her seemed to be much more important and it attracted her full attention.
Military trucks seemed to block the road, behind them a sanitary make-shift lab had been set, while people lined up,so this was where majority of the residents had gone,Kara turned towards Aiden with a confused gaze
"And now?"
"Now we back up,find some safe place to spend the night and tomorrow we sort things out with fresh minds" While speaking Aiden switched on the radio and changed channel continuously.
"Why are none of the stations talking about the epidemy or the road block?" Patrick muttered "They should at least alert people in time"
"Beats me,back in Rotterdam we watched the news both in the morning and prior to the attack,in all cases the issues seemed to be in only Amsterdam, they never mentioned the other cities were being hit" Julienne added.
"The world government is keeping this from civilians, this virus...it was probably some messed up experiment for some bio-fucking something weapon" Aiden retorted while lighting another cigarette but it was promptly snatched by Kara "Don't smoke in the car"
"He shouldn't be smoking at all" Joan pitched in.
Aiden's hands trembled irregularly on the steering wheel and Patrick noticed this with a questioning look, was Aiden addicted to nicotine? He had learnt in school that things such as tobacco could get really addictive, was this going to be an issue? Patrick wondered.
Gripping the steering tightly Aiden then added "I have an old friend in Lugano that is still connected enough to tell me what is going on,so we will soon have to split"
"One step at a time Aiden,we will cross that bridge when we get to it" Kara said while falling back to sit "For now let's find somewhere to park and rest"
"I'm sticking with you" Patrick concluded.
Aiden sighed and put the gear on reverse, but as he moved a few inches backwards seven soldiers ran towards his vehicle while yelling "HALT" in tough German accents "Oh fuck me" Joan sighed, a phrase that invited a swift hit from her elder sister "There is a kid"
Aiden immediately told Kara to move to the front "Why?" she questioned while Aiden scrammed to the back "Soldiers are way more patient with females and we are carrying enough fire power for a military squad in a country where gun use is far from common, the last thing we need is a search" Kara nodded before rolling down the window and sticking out her head out from the driver's sit,as she did that Aiden could feel his head banging,he needed his pills as soon as possible.
"DOKUMENTE BITTE" The soldier said, the man sounded German but didn't look it,infact he had more of a Western facial structure,he was a gigantic fellow who probably stood almost seven feet tall and had tons of muscles, she wasn't even able to see Aiden matching such monstrosity in a fight "English please?" She replied,Dutch and German could be similar to other people but she hadn't understood jack from what the man had uttered.
"Your documents please" The soldier repeated in English, Kara brought out her identity card and handed it over to the soldier, the soldier glanced through it "Could you step out of the vehicle miss?" The soldier said calmly ,a cold glacial feeling ran through everyone's spine as their heart rates increased.
"Is there a problem?" Kara said while complying, the sergeant read the document again before raising his gaze back to meet Kara's "Not really,I just need to run this through my superior" he then jogged off while yelling "Sergeant!!!" as he moved little tremors followed,Kara could already see herself starting the ignition and speeding away like a mad person, but she knew it would be futile, they would probably catch them in no time and the van was surrounded by soldiers, was her luck dead? Maybe she needed to start consulting her horoscope.
Meanwhile,at the back of the van the conversation between the soldier and Kara could not even be heard and there was worry in the eyes of Joan and Julienne and that worry only grew when they realised that the slumped Aiden wasn't moving "Aiden?"
"Joan what's wrong with him?" Patrick whispered
Joan didn't reply as she slowly crawled to his side and opened his eyelids while pointing her torch into his eyes....his pupils didn't react, she then checked his pulse "He isn't breathing Jules,he isn't brea-" Joan panicked but her mouth was promptly closed by Julienne's hand.
"Shhshshshshshssh, You will just get us caught, there is nothing we can do for him if he is dead" she then looked around "But how the hell did he die,he was just fine a minute ago"
"He wasn't" Patrick seethed from the passenger's seat,he didn't say more because he could now see the incoming soldier with his sergeant tagging closely behind,Kara could not hear what was going, she was fully focused on the man who seemed to be the sergeant,he was a normal man with sandy coloured hair,he looked pretty normal except for the fact that he also looked western.
"Good day miss,my name is Sergeant Dob Erman"
