The Mute Violin

Chapter 14: Operetta

Chapter 14: Operetta

Apr 07, 2018

I freeze. The hairs on my body standing on its ends. Frightened was never a description I used much, and thought I would use on myself. Until now.

The voice was a crooning, soft and sweet, echoing across my room.

I stumble out of my bed, nearly tripping over my covers, and ran down out to the hall, quickly shutting the door behind me.

The hall was silent. There was a few chatting quietly. They did not pay attention to me or pay heed to any creepy noises around them.

Was it just my room?

I open the door, and there it was, the soft singing voice of ... something.

Why just my room though? Where is it coming from?

Slightly braver, for just knowing that there were other people awake and outside of my room, I creep into the room and put an ear to everything.

I open the window and look outside. Nothing. I quickly open the cupboard. Nothing. I listen to all four walls. Nothing.

I glance below my bed. Nothing.

I breathe out a sigh of relief, but yet the nose was still enveloping itself around the room and into my ear.

Though I seemed to hear it clear, it was still a tiny bit muffled.

I put my ear to the floor.

It was coming form below me.

I turn my head to look at the little carpet under my bed.

When I was younger the doctor gave me the carpet, because he noticed that there was a hole underneath the bed and sometimes a draft would come up and he said sleeping on a draft was a sure way to get ill.

I pull the carpet away from the bed. The hole was never repaired. It is still there and though it was small, I'm certain I could look down through it. I craw, underneath the bed and look through the hole.

There was a lady, dressed in a large green robe, crooning a song by her lonesome.

Why is she singing to herself in an empty room?

Then the figure turns its head slightly upwards towards me and I recognise who she is.

All Heston ever wanted to do was to play onstage in the Court Orchestra. His mentor would never let him, and his mentor's son Mikhail, scorned the idea.
Then one day Heston's mute violin goes missing, his mentor falls into a coma and Mikhail goes missing.

Will Heston recover what he has lost?

A story of magic! Intrigue! Drama! Emotion!

But overall a story of boy finding his voice amongst the chaos that is life.

"Doesn't matter the instrument, doesn't matter the song! Don't you just want to sing?"
