The period of “peace” was soon replaced with chaos. Upon entering her private hospital room we found her bed ‘empty’. The hospital quickly became a scene of distraught as nurses searched through every inch of the hospital for the ‘lost’ patient; but Jason seemed to know better!
With a deadly scowl plastered to his face he stormed off, mumbling something about checking security cameras. What was even more frightening was that he came back with two officers following behind him.
“I swear to god, if either of you know where she is or helped her I’m locking you all up for kidnapping!” He hissed, entering the room again he glanced out the window, the window that was ‘always’ open…
“She wouldn’t, would she?” Derik’s face paled.
“We’re on the fricking third floor!” Derik yelled causing him a quick reprimand from a passing nurse that was still frantic about Cairi being ‘missing’.
“She couldn’t have gone far.” One of the policemen’s voice echoed out of the room.
“Who couldn’t have gone far?” A voice asked from behind us. Turning abruptly to find Cairi with a sugar cone in hand, eating her ice cream as if she hadn’t noticed the chaos for the last hour and a half.
“You!” Derik threw his hands out to her to make it clear as daylight who he was talking about.
“Where the hell were you?” Jason asked having heard Derik’s exclamation.
“Took a walk to the toilet at the end of the corridor, headed to the garden on top of the hospital’s roof, then down to the café to get something to eat with the money you left on the bedside table and then came back here as soon as I had my hands on some ice cream…” She said it all as if we should have known.
“And not a single camera caught you?” The senior officer asked, his rookie seeming confused about all that has happened.
“Yes…?” She said as if she didn’t really understand what they ‘needed’ to understand.
“Cairi…” Jason shook his head.
“What?” She half shouted; offended that he would suspect her of ‘something’.
“Nothing. How are you feeling?” He waved off any indication that he was just about to commit murder.
“Alright, I mean my head feels like it has its own heart, and the throbbing is irritating, but other than that…” She shrugged her shoulders leaving no room to enquire further as she stepped into her room right pass Jason and closed the door.
“The captain has agreed that the two of you are to stay posted outside of her room.” Jason said without turning to face them.
Even I had to admit; Cairi seemed skilled in the art of disappearing on a whim! And I could only imagine how it must affect him, her being such a trouble maker!
