Prompt: Your character drives out to the desert and screams a question to the stars.

What was the question?

What is the reply?

---

I couldn't take this anymore. I packed up a bag, and got into the car. didn't know where I was going, but I knew why. I needed to say goodbye. I needed to ask for forgiveness.

It wasn't until I saw the big blue house that I knew where I was. The big blue house was his neighbor’s, it seemed to loom over the whole block. I drove past his house, tears welling in my eyes. As I reached the end of the road, I could see the stars. They were always so big, but tonight they were close enough to touch.

The road turned to sand beneath the car. I stopped and got out. It was so warm during the day, I forget how cold it gets at night. I took off my shoes, like I used to do when I was with him. As I ran further into the sea of sand, I felt more at home.

After what felt like both forever and no time at all, I stopped. Out of breath, I bent over gasping for air. A smile covered my face as a sense of familiarity curled up in my stomach. I missed him so much. By now my face was soaking in tears, but still my smile lingered.

I remembered what I came here to do. I looked up at the stars, and felt at home. I was ready to move on. Not to forget, but ready to be happy, especially when I thought of him. I opened my mouth and shouted at the ever-expanding sky, at the all-knowing stars, and most importantly, at him. “Do you forgive me yet? Forgive me for not being able to help you, for not knowing that something was wrong?”

Obviously, there was no answer. But as I turned to walk back to the car, I felt something in the sand. It glinted in the starlight.

I picked it up, and to my surprise, it was a locket. Not just any locket. My locket, the one I thought I had lost so many years before, when I first met him.

I opened it up, and smiled at what was inside.
