Days passed and it seemed like life as it had been before Cairi had returned. She had yet to start classes… When I asked Jason about it, he said something about her staying over at their grandfather, in the old age home… I honestly didn’t know anyone could “stay” over at an old age home, yet she was.
Curiosity though nagged at me, the kind that kept asking me why she would be so invested in that old mansion! Heading up the hill as snow started to fall I noticed a glow from within, warm and bright, the kind that only fire could illuminate, but nothing was burning…
I wasn’t alone, Richard had insisted on coming along, adamant about bringing Cairi her just reward for what she “did” to him, no one any wiser to why she would be calling him a “murderer” if not the “murder” of the flower. As we got closer, sure enough there was Cairi with her legs hanging out by the window! My heart leapt up into my throat!
“Cairi! No!” I yelled, panicked, I could feel my blood run as cold as the snow that fell… But she calmly waved at us…
“Glad you could make it!” Her voice beamed over the singing wind that was picking up; a storm slowly brewing, waiting for its chance to wreak havoc! She truly did look ethereal, like a true ghost…
“What are you doing here?” I asked to afraid to run in and up towards her; too afraid my initial fears would be realized as soon as she was no longer in my sight!
“Snuck out after Gramps passed out!” She grinned from ear-to-ear.
She watched with mischief as Richard took out his phone ready to dial Jason; but the look he had wasn’t the kind that one would have when sweet revenge was just a click away, as her rang for Jason, he seemed worried for something else… and then his worry seemed to grow!
“I put up a signal block, so that my brother’s possible ‘traps’ can’t notify him and that calls can go out…” she smiled maliciously like a vengeful ‘spook’!
“My brother really needs to start living his own life…” A sadness crept into her voice I had never heard from her before.
“Why?” The question hesitant.
“Cause… It’ll be better for him later on… Just like…” I could see her lips move but her last words were drowned out by the howling wind! She casted her eyes towards the darkening clouds once before throwing herself back inside and disappearing from the attic window. My heart seemed to ease up on its insistent pounding.
Moments passed and she exited the mansion.
“Come-on! We need to get going before Jason, suspects something! And Richard… Please… I know… Just..” She looked like she was about to confess something, maybe even apologize?
“Just keep your mouth shut or else I’ll shut it for you!” Her pleading tone turned three-sixty and she barked at him like she always did!
