Not long after the Feral tried to eat me--alive I might add--Kolt took me Henry Ivy Park. A little park nestled between a few blocks, it wasn't anything special, but got us far away from that building we ended up on before the police showed up.
"Why are we here?" I asked.
"Just wait." Kolt replied, and soon, we stopped in the middle of the park.
"Sit here." he pointed to a wooden bench. I did as he told.
My whole left side felt like it been hit repeatably by a hammer. That Monster really did a number on me, and it was not like I stood a chance. He was faster, stronger, and much tougher than any of the bullies at my school.
"Here." Kolt said, tossing me a small glass bottle.
I examined it, and inside was a red liquid. "What is is?"
"A healing potion."
"Haha--no, for real."
"I mean it." he insisted.
I didn't think healing potions existed in the real world. Only in videogames right? It didn't stop me from taking a swig of it, and almost instantly, my wounds were all healed. I patted myself down, and made sure this was real.
"Whoa." I said.
"I know, cool huh?"
"Were can I find more of those."
"For the affordable price of one million dollars, you can buy your life-saving healing potion, and heal your friends in battle." he showboated.
A MILLION dollars! Goddamn, no wonder he looks broke. I thought it would at least me a hundred dollars, like a hundred in gold in a RPG or something. I couldn't believe something like that.
"Yeah," Kolt began, then sat next to me, "the healing potions are a hard item to get, and are really rare."
"Why waste a million dollars?"
"It's not a waste if it can save a life." he defended himself.
As much as I would love to talk about, why a goddamn healing potion costs a fortune, I needed to know what happen tonight. And fast, if I'm ever going to know why those things were after me.
"So, when are you going to explain everything to me?" I asked.
Kolt looked at the ground first, then towards the sky before finally saying--
"Do you believe in Monsters?"
"After today, how can I not."
"What if I told you that their all around us. Waiting for the perfect moment to strike, like just then."
I thought about it, but I couldn't see where he was getting at.
"Who do you call if they attack?"
"Ghostbusters?" I joked.
"Seriously..."
"Okay, okay...how about the military?"
Kolt shakes his head. Guess that's not the answer. But then it came to mind, what the answer was...
"Seekers?"
"Correct." Kolt said.
"Soooo, who are they?"
"Who?"
"The Seekers, dumbass!"
"Ooooh, right. Sorry."
Kolt leaned back in the bench, and started to look up in the sky again. I couldn't tell what he was thinking about, but eventually, he began to tell me everything.
"Well, A Seeker is like, a special kind of detective. But instead of hunting criminals, we hunt--"
"Monsters."
"Yep. We use a special kind of power, called Mana." he held out his hand, and a blue aura glowed around it, "We use this to kill the Monster, along with some "Special" weapons."
"So, your like a wizard?"
"What?"
"A Wizard."
Kolt's face grew into one of disgust when he heard me say the word "wizard". He obviously didn't like the sound of it.
"What's so wrong about being a wizard?" I asked.
"First, that's a degrading term for a Seeker. Second, there is a huge difference between a Seeker and a dumb wizard."
"Like?"
"Unlike Seekers, wizards can't communicate with Mana."
"Communicate?"
"Yeah!" he exclaimed, "Picture Mana, like a form of energy. We Seekers can communicate with it on the same frequency, thus allowing us to do more than just throw fireballs are willy-nilly"
"But what dose this have to do with me?"
"Think about it. How else do you have a sense for your surroundings, not just were you've been. And, you've been saved number of time by it. Remember how I pushed you into those cops?"
"Yeah."
"How hard do you think I pushed you?"
I thought about it for a minute. "At least hard enough to cause a couple of scraps."
"Yeah, and when those Ogres tossed you around. Even thou you suffered a few injures, if you were a normal human, then you would be dead."
"So, basically. It's been saving my ass for a while now, huh?"
"Yep."
This was allot to take in. I was sure that it was still dumb luck I survived, but Kolt made it seem otherwise. Like, he knew this was all going to happen.
"Is that why the Ogres and that vampire--"
"Feral."
"Whatever. That's why they were after me?"
"Well, the Ogres were just pissed at you."
"Because I hit their guy with a glass pitcher."
"Yep, pretty cool BTW. But the Feral was after you from the moment we meet."
"What?!"
"Yeah. That Feral smelt the Mana coming off you, and wanted it all for himself."
"But you said only Seekers can use Mana!"
"I did..."
It all made sense. That Feral, said something about needing to eat me on order to feed. But it wasn't my blood, but the Mana inside me. That meant I was like Kolt, a Seeker...
"So...I'm a Seeker?"
Kolt shook his head. "No. No, your not a Seeker. Just a human with a load of Mana inside. But with help, your could become on, or at least find a way to suppress your Mana."
"But...I could be." I pressed on.
"Yeees, but it's not that easy, and your to young."
There goes my dream of becoming a kickass magical crime fighter.
"Sooooo, that's a no?"
Kolt shook his head again. "Not exactly. I can't leave you like you are, or else more Monsters--just as strong at the Ogres and Feral--would come after you, and try to eat you as well."
I was confused. Kolt made no sense when it came to this stuff, but he was my only lead into the world of Monsters.
"What do you mean then, motherfucker?"
"What I mean--you rude ass punk--is that I'll help you, on one condition."
Oh great, there's a catch to this...
"What is it?" I asked.
Kolt took a deep breath, and finally, he said...
"Help me kill the bastards that killed my girlfriend."
