After he had finished work, Tavell Ruskin drove home, already wondering what his mother had decided to cook for dinner. He wasn't sure why she insisted on living with him, but he just didn't have the heart to tell the lady how embarrassing it was-- and she fed him.

Pulling up onto his drive, Tavell was slightly confused to see that the kitchen lights weren't on. He unlocked the door and walked in.

"Mother?" he called out, but there was no reply.

She's fallen asleep in her chair before, so maybe that's happened again, he reasoned, ignoring the sense that something was wrong.

Walking into his living room, Tavell flicked the light switch. "Mother?"

Her chair was facing away from him. He tried to ignore that sense again-- foolish, he thought-- and walked around the chair.

Tavell's hands began to shake, and he just stood there, not quite sure what to do. What do people do when they find their mother dead in their living room?

Cry, he answered himself, yet he felt no urge to cry. He felt nothing.

Deciding that the best course of action would be to ring the emergency services, he did so, and stood there. He was still standing there after they had left.

Tavell Ruskin's mother was dead.
