Echoing wolf cried from the distant mountains are what keep me tense. Because I don’t know if they’re wolves or hunters dogs. Being me can be fun and all, but not when those mortals come after me, thinking with their stupid minds that they gain glory by taking my head.
Snaps and creaks from the trees scream at me as I jump from one to the other. Leaves padder against my body, leaving slick trails of night drizzle. At least humans don’t check trees for prints. Again, stupid. But their biggest mistake was wounding me. Two on my four wings dangle near frail from my back, black blood protruding from the bullet and knife wounds. Their mistake, you might ask, is that I heal stronger.
A loud, ominous bang cracked through crisp night just as a town comes to view. One leap from the forest, andI land onto the room of an outcasted house. The lights within blare ablaze from the windows, a single shadow dancing in quick pace from one end of the room to the next. I may not like playing with humans, but it’ll do best for me.
I duck into the house from an open peephole at the top of the building and find my kill easy, since her back was to me and my blade too sharp to stammar. The humans body falls dead to the floor, a pooling puddle of sweet blood pooling so beautifully over the stone floor. I raise my hand as I crouch and touch the female mortals head. Black fog engulfed us both and in the seconds I’m blind and numb, I’m waking to find my face pressed to a cobble floor.
Pain flooded through my head like a storm, being shaken away with a quick rub to my temple. I press my hands to the floor to sit up and a burning itch flares up my back. I stand to see the blood pool gone, feeling my back to feel no liquid or opening of a leaking wound. Another person came into view and I readied my sword for another kill, only to see myself. The human body I took over was hideous. It had paling skin from being inside too long, dark brown hair with matching dirt eyes, and a single scar gashing from above the right eyebrow to below the left cheek line.
A banging and shout from the door broke my take-in. I put my sword aside and picked up a leather jacket, swinging it over my shoulders like I’ve seen humans do so many times before. The door opens on its own as I approach, showing me the hunters who’d attacked me hours prior. Each glanced over my body and their cheeks tinted red. I then realized the coolness over my abdomen and took note that I wasn’t wearing nothing on my top but a bra.
“Have you seen a demon come ‘round here?” one spoke up.
I shook my head, fighting to urge to cackle at their idiocracy. They tipped their hats and headed for the nearby town, sneaking glances back at me. The door slid close when I walked away and I let the wicked smile take my lips. Stupid humans and their even stupider mistakes. Makes my problems all the easier to make.
