Catfish (Short Series)

4 : Modern love

4 : Modern love

Apr 25, 2018

'I am so sorry. I'm not feeling well.'

Mia apologetically professed to her boss.

'It's alright Mia. Just take the day off, get some rest and come to work when you're better.'

Mia's hesitant attitude in not taking leave from work has finally paid off. Samuel her boss, seemed to buy her fake sick excuse. That means there's only one thing to worry about; her walk of shame.

Last night's dress, checked. Walking barefoot holding sexy heels, checked. Barefaced and bed hair, checked.

Mia was definitely getting all the stares as she walked to the nearest block to hail a taxi. Uber wasn't working, her phone was dying, Mia shrugged off her apparent bad start on this morning.

She recalled how Josh had his last teasing words sink into Mia's thought. Josh wasn't only aware that she had bitterly got drunk after being dumped by her date, Mia had also profusely pity-text him into coming to see her. It was definitely not the way to meet someone for the first time.

Mia climbed in to a bright yellow taxi and while she indicated to the taxi her place of residence, she couldn't help in being disappointed in screwing up her chance with Josh.

His confident demeanor, his chiseled body and his mischievous chuckles all oozed sex appeal.

God damn it, Mia.

She scrolled through her phone, few text messages from Evelyn and a couple of missed calls from work. Her eyes twitched with annoyance. There it was, clear as day.

'Heyyyyyyyy still up for some fun?'

'Josh I am here, I am sexy and I am ready.'

'Come onnn booo come.'

Mia gulped as she browse through her blatant desperate messages sent to Josh last night.

Oh well. Say goodbye to Josh and his fine ass.

She slid her phone into her purple leather, coach bag. Her dark brown eyes heavy with tiredness. She didn't seem to have gotten a restful sleep, despite the comfy bed and duvet covering her at Josh's place.

'You'll regret this, bitch.'

Her ex's last words rang through her mind. Mia shut her eyes and slowly leaned against the taxi's seat. She had put aside all of her hopes for a relationship. Mia's ambition and pure passion to pursue her career gave her happiness.

It didn't do any good for her relationship of course. Initially, she thought that men were the problem. After a long period of time as a single lady, she realized she had her own shortcomings too. Mia wasn't keen to talk about problems, even when it concerned the love of her life.

She had always pretended everything was alright. Whether her ex was just staying late for work, or he needed an extra phone for work and even the time when she accidently saw sexy pictures of women in his phone.

Mia told herself, everyone looked. What's wrong in looking? It doesn't mean he is cheating. If she had insisted on questioning the issue, there goes her image as a cool, confident modern woman. No, she wouldn't do that, she wouldn't stoop so low. Her fingers trailed the hem of her dress.

It had worked out for the better.

Her outfits, her loft and her collection of makeup are enough to make any girl envy. She had traded her time for work instead of dealing with issues of relationship. After all, monogamous relationships are such passé. Empowered promiscuity and polyamory are the what working women inspired for. Maybe.

Just before she fell asleep, Mia thought of Josh. His amicable goodbye hug, his sweet personality and the way he looked at her.

Maybe it isn't so wrong to want to wake up beside that kind of man.

'Maybe.'

Mia muttered as her eyes sealed shut, while the taxi made it's way through the New York morning traffic.

Mia isn't a bombshell. She loves Tinder, no commitment and every bit of fun as any date.

That is until she meets Josh; heartthrob sweetheart, definite 10 with green puppy eyes to match.

As she wakes up in his bed, she's never going to be the same.
