One Seed at a Time: A "Stardew Valley" Fan Story

Linden: The First Day

Linden: The First Day

May 05, 2018

My eyes flashed open and a world of color invenomed my sight. It was the first morning in our new home. A lot has happened in the past day. I felt a discomfort in my mouth. I groaned realizing that some of my dark brown hair was in my mouth. I pulled it out and turned onto one side in my bed. My baseball cap was on my nightstand. I looked across and saw Ash staring out the window on her bed.
"What time is it...?" I asked her, my speech slurred.
"Nine," Ash responded, her speech slightly slurred as well. "I've been up since six."

Ash was wide awake, but she still looked messy, her eyes had dark circles and her hair was all messed up. "Honestly, how do you guys sleep this late?" She asked, "The latest I've ever slept was seven thirty." She tucked some of her magenta hair behind her ear. I turned my head over to see Roco. I giggled and covered my mouth to not make noise, but clearly, Ash could see my body shaking. I pointed to Roco and she started giggling too. Roco's mouth was wide open, and he was drooling. He was drooping halfway off the bed. His blonde hair was a big mess, and his glasses were on the floor.

I put on my baseball cap backward and slipped on my sneakers. Ash put on her "Uggs" and we stepped outside on the porch. I looked at the mess of a farm we had. I drooped my head and groaned, forgetting about the work yet to be done. We didn't even have seeds to plant.
"Look," Ash said, pointing to a wrapped package. I tore off the paper and opened the box. It was from Mayor Lewis. I pulled out some parsnip seeds.
"What are... parsnips?" Ash asked, twisting her face in disgust.
"I dunno," I replied. "Some weird carrot-like things, I heard." We went back inside our cottage. Roco was still asleep. I put my hand on his back and shook him awake. He grunted in displeasure.
"What was that for???" He snapped. I shrugged, and put my hands in the pockets of the sweatshirts. It said, "I Love SDV".

Roco put on his shoes and backpack and we went ahead and got out our tools. I looked at Ash, thwacking away at trees and small logs. Roco was heaving his pickaxe into large stones. I got out my scythe and started to cut away the weeds and fiber. There was space for one little pack of produce. I took out my hoe and tilled the ground. Ash planted the seeds while Roco watered them. I took off my sweatshirt and wrapped it around my waste, still having my T-shirt on. It was getting hot.

Ash head into town to go meet some people. I didn't understand the point of that. I headed back to the cottage to watch TV. I flipped through channels until I found one quite interesting. There was an announcer in a genie costume. It looked ridiculous.
"Welcome to Welwick's Oracle, the only show where the spirits are channeled directly to YOU!" The genie-person said. It switched to some kind of psychic lady with a crystal ball.
"Ah, a sensed that a new viewer has joined us, a girl from... Stardew Valley?" The woman said. I jumped back in shock, but my eyes were still glued to the TV. "I sense their presence now..." The woman continued, wiggling her fingers around the crystal ball. "The... the spirits are in good humor today. I think you'll have a little extra luck." The screen switched to a commercial. I turned off the TV and rolled my eyes. Oh, brother, I thought. I suddenly heard a knock on the door.
"Ugh, I don't wanna deal with this right now," I mumbled to myself. I opened the door and saw a short woman who was slightly overweight. She had a braid in her brown.

"Hi," She said. "I'm Marnie, the runner of the ranch in the forest." I looked and saw a dog by her side. "This little guy right here," Marnie continued, pointing to the dog, "he doesn't have a home, but I saw him hanging around by the farm. I think he liked you and your friends. He might need a home, so I was wondering if you would keep him." I gasped in elation. This is one of the only things I get excited over.
"Yes!" I squealed. "I'll call him Niko!"
"Alright," Marnie said. "Niko, you be a good boy, alright?" Niko wagged his tail. I began to pet the dog and hug him as Marnie left. Ash and Roco returned from their errands. I ran out to them, clapping my hands.
"We got a dog!!!!!!!" I exclaimed.
