The coat smelled unfamiliar, but nice, although she was confused to why Roger even had it in his closet. Although, she was glad he did as the clouds above threatened to rain and the wind started to pick up. She shoved her hands in the pockets of the pea coat and followed Roger, who stopped in front of a gas station. He told her to wait outside and he reemerged again with a pack of smokes and a new box of matches. Lily stared, surprised about his habit. Now that she thought about it, she did think his apartment smelled strangely, but she couldn't put her finger on it.
"You smoke?" she asked, more of a statement than a question. Roger shrugged as he stuck a cigarette in his mouth and lit a match. Lily wasn't sure if she should mention what the death sticks did to his lungs, but she figured it wasn't her business.
They continued down the street without a word spoken between them. Lily examined the street carefully, looking for non humans and the reactions of such. Most looked like they were human, but she did notice a vampire walking on the opposite side of the street. Roger caught her staring, and he pulled her arm to pull her attention away.
"Don't stare. That'll get you in trouble," Roger warned with the cigarette between his teeth. Lily glanced up at him before looking at her feet, remembering his warning earlier. "His name is Jeremiah, and he's nearly three hundred years old. He goes by Jeremy around here to blend in. He's one of the best vampire regulators I know."
"Vampire regulators?" Lily murmured, hoping not to draw attention to herself. Roger nodded.
"He makes sure that vampires aren't killing or turning too many people. If something gets out of hand, you can count on Jeremy to get to the bottom of the problem," Roger continued as he glanced over his shoulder briefly. "I would say that he's probably on such a mission. It's rare to see him in this area of the city."
"I see," Lily whispered, still looking at her feet. However, after a few paces, she walked right into Roger's back. When she looked up, she found the vampire Jeremy standing in front of Roger. Jeremy was a towering man with a gaunt face, and Lily could see his ghastly pale skin. His eyes were a bright red and sunken into his face. He looked serious as his hands were clasped behind his back and his eyes narrowed down on Roger.
"Jeremy," Roger greeted, dipping his head in respect.
"Roger, it's nice to see you out and about again. Who is the young lady?" Jeremy inquired, looking past Roger.
"This is Miss Ambers, and I am training her to be my new partner," Roger answered, turning so Jeremy could see her fully. Lily shuffled uncomfortably as she awkwardly stuck her hand out to shake his hand. However, he grabbed and kissed the back of it. Lily felt shivers run down her spine as his own hand and lips were deathly cold.
"Pleasure," Jeremy smiled, his voice smoother than it was before. Lily glanced up at him, and noticed something different. She could see both realities for a moment. On the outside, Jeremy had a rosy coloring in his skin and his eyes were a brilliant green. Lily could also see the truth beneath as the vampire she had seen earlier. The vampire let go of her hand and chuckled.
"Don't tease her," Roger sighed before Jeremy shrugged.
"Ah, but she's such a doll. Most new recruits run in terror when they see me, not stare at me blankly. I like her," Jeremy replied before Roger rolled his eyes. Lily continued to stare, trying to make sense of what she was seeing. "How badly does Kurt need her? She would make a good addition to the clan."
"Pretty badly, because if I can't find a replacement, that means that I'm out of a job," Roger answered sternly as Jeremy grimaced.
"I see. Too bad. Although, if you are able to find a replacement for her, I would be glad to take her off your hands," Jeremy amended with a smile.
"You know she's a person, right? Not something you can just take off my hands," Roger reminded, folding his arms. Jeremy shrugged again and turned to Lily, who jumped at the sudden attention.
"Here's my card if you ever get bored of him, sweetheart," Jeremy soothed, gracefully handing her a black card with white ink. It had his name and a phone number printed plainly on the front without much else.
"Will do," she replied in a shaky voice and a shy smile. Jeremy grinned broadly, both hiding his fangs from the world and showing them to her and Roger. Lily smiled more confidently, growing more relaxed with him by the minute. Jeremy straightened and smiled at Roger again.
"Are you done?" Roger asked, raising an eyebrow. Jeremy sighed and looked at him.
"Not unless you want a card as well," Jeremy winked, conjuring another card seemingly from thin air. Roger rolled his eyes again. "I'll take that as a no."
"Don't you have work to do?" Roger inquired harshly.
"Unfortunately, I do indeed. I will take my leave for now," the vampire agreed before turning to Lily and grabbed her hand. She blushed as his lips touched her hand once again. "I hope to see you again soon."
"Uh, yeah," Lily whispered, wondering what had come over her. Roger exhaled impatiently before Jeremy left with a smile and a nod. Lily felt herself relax and she took a deep breath. Roger scoffed irritably and continued down the street.
