Once Lily was safe back home, Roger made the call to send the new furniture for her to be delivered. He informed her that they would be there soon, but he had a personal errand to attend to. Lily didn't seem to mind as she looked absolutely exhausted.
He locked the door behind him and walked down the street. Sonya's bar was across town, so he lit a cigarette and went on his way. The sky had grown dark and night was fast approaching, but Roger didn't mind. Night provided great cover, regardless of whether or not he was on a mission. He inhaled, feeling the smoke in his lungs.
It wasn't long until he arrived at Sonya's. As always, he stood at the door for a moment, wondering if he really should go in, before putting out his smoke. He pushed opened the door and walked inside. It was still such an unfamiliar sight seeing Sonya standing at the counter, pouring drinks and laughing with strangers. Roger wondered if he would ever get used to it. However, there was something else he wasn't expecting.
"Hello, welcome back!" Sonya called, waving at Roger from the bar. It was like his heart had been pierced by an arrow from behind. He could hardly breathe as he waved back, not very enthusiastically. He sat down in the corner of the crowded bar, hoping that she would easily forget that he was even there. Coming back was a mistake, and he could feel it. He started to wonder what would happen if she started to remember because he was around so much.
Luckily, Sonya was busy at the bar and she wasn't able to personally take his order. Instead, Izzy the waitress took his order and brought him his drinks throughout the night. He wondered why he even bothered tonight, since Sonya started to notice him. He should have been more careful, maybe wear a disguise or order different drinks. Roger guessed it was because he was missing her light in his life, and he didn't care if she noticed him. However, things were different. He felt guilty for intruding on her life, even if it was a minor part. He downed the scotch Izzy had brought him and set the glass back down on the table.
"Do you want another, honey?" Izzy asked as she walked by his table. He gave a half smile and shook his head. Roger had to keep his head together, since he had a problem he had to deal with when he got home. His new partner was marked, and he had left her all alone in the apartment. It wasn't that she wasn't safe, but he felt bad for leaving right after they arrived. He wanted some time for himself, to think and to remember. However, it didn't help his stress levels like he thought it would. After two drinks, he flagged Izzy down and closed out his tab before heading back out the door. Then a hand grabbed his arm. Slowly, he turned and found that Sonya was looking up at him with a concerned look.
"Leaving so soon?" she asked, confused at herself as well. Roger moved away from the door and smiled as she let go of his arm.
"I forgot there was something I had to do," he answered as he went to turn away again.
"Will you be back tomorrow?" Sonya asked, surprised at herself once again. Roger froze for a moment before she laughed awkwardly. "I'm sorry, I'm usually not this pushy. I just have gotten used to seeing you around and I was just wondering."
"It's okay," he replied before he turned to face her with a smile. She looked relieved, but still embarrassed at herself. "And I think I should be able to return tomorrow, if you want me to."
"Only if you want to, but I would love to see you here again," she answered, still embarrassed. Roger gave a sad smirk, realizing that the old Sonya was still in there somewhere, just suppressed by the memory spell.
"Then I will be here tomorrow night," Roger smiled with a nod. Sonya held out her hand in front of him.
"My name is Sonya, by the way," she introduced with a grin after realizing that she hadn't formally introduced herself. Roger grimaced, but hid it with a false smile the best he could. He shook her hand.
"Roger," he whispered, doing his best to keep the pain he felt out of his voice. It seemed to have worked, as she didn't give any sign of realizing that his heart was shattering.
"Well then, Roger, I will see you tomorrow, and I'll give you a drink on the house to pay for my strange behavior," Sonya suggested, making his smile return.
"There's no need for that. I'll see you tomorrow," Roger waved before walking out the door and into the night. He leaned against the window and covered his face with his hands. As he looked up toward the sky again, only one thought entered his mind.
What have I done?
