Chang took my hand and led me to our room so we could change. Now that he knows my secret I don’t have to run to the bathroom to change. He’ll turn his back or stand outside the door and wait for me. We headed down to the garage and he handed me a helmet before pulling his bike out; I swung my leg over and wrapped my arms around his waist. He revved the engine and we took off out of the garage, down the drive and onto the street. I’ve never been on a motorcycle before but I love it. I feel like I’m flying. He revved the engine again and we went faster. It wasn’t long before we were parking in front of the diner, not ready to eat yet we decided to walk around the small town square. We stopped in a little boutique, it’s a small blue building with little trinkets in the windows. An old lady with gray hair and dressed in a blue sundress greeted us.
“Is there anything I can help you find?”
“No, were just looking. But thank you.” The women nodded and we walked around the shop. I picked out a few things I liked and took them up to the desk and paid for them. I filled out some paperwork so the nice lady could send me my purchases. It’s hard to travel with bags on a motorcycle. We walked over to the diner and sat at a booth in the back. The place is nice with an old fashion vibe. A girl dressed in an orange skirt and tank top walked over to us. She’s a cute girl with blue eyes and a nice smile, heavy bangs, and her hair pulled back into a ponytail and then braided so it hung like a rope down to her waste.
“Hi. My name’s Fern, I’ll be your waitress today.” She took our orders and walked back to the kitchen. I touched my hair. Before I chopped it off I had long waist length, silky black hair and I miss it. Chang put his hand on mine and smiled.
“You’re beautiful.” I smiled at him. The girl brought our food and we spoke while we ate. This is my first date ever and I’m dressed like a boy. I started to laugh.
“What’s so funny?”
“Our situation. I never thought I would be dressed like a boy on my first date.” Chang laughed too.
“Yeah, I never thought I would be on a date with a boy either.” We were in the middle of laughing when some of our club friends showed up.“
"Hey, guys look its Ping and Chang,” Hercules said.
“I thought that was your bike outside,“ Merida said before sliding in next to Chang.
"You guys should have told us you were going out to celebrate we would have come too” John said. I sighed to myself and looked down at my food. Chang and the guy’s started talking. That’s when I knew all was lost. I slid out of my seat saying I had to use the restroom. But instead, I went out the front door. I leaned against the building and sighed. The sun felt warm on my skin so I closed my eyes and lifted my face to it.
“Are you okay honey?” I looked over to see who had talked to me. To my surprise, it was the old lady from the shop. I smiled at her. She reminded me of my grandmother back in China.
“Yes ma'am, I’m just getting some fresh air.” She nodded in understanding.
“Well, whatever’s on your mind be sure to push it away every once in a while. Too much stress isn’t good for a child your age.
"Yes, ma'am I will.” She gave me a soft smile and walked off. Relax hugh? I pulled my cell phone out and called Mushu.
“Hey, what’s doing?”
“Hey, I’m in that small town Jaq told us about. Will you come get me?”
“What happened? Date with lover boy not going well?”
“It got interrupted.”
“How?”
“The whole club showed up.”
“Oh… yeah, I can see how that would spoil the mood. I’ll call you when I’m close.”
“Thank you.” I hung up the phone and started to walk down the street little ways. I stopped in a small antique shop to look around. A girl who looked to be about my age approached me. She’s a thin girl with long black hair and almost purple eyes.
“Hi, can I help you with anything?” She’s a cute short girl with a nice smile. She wore a soft white shirt with a Purple skirt that moved around her legs.
“No, I’m just looking. My names Mulan.” The girl looked at me with surprise.
“Kinda a strange name for a boy.”
“That’s because I’m not really a boy.”
“You sure do look like a boy. My name’s Cricket.” We smiled at each other and took a seat on one of the old couches that was in the shop. I explained my story to her and she seemed really interested in what I was saying.
“So you really like this boy, hugh?”
“Yeah, I’ve never liked a boy before either. I’m always treated as one of the guys when I wish they could just see me as a girl; the only person I can be myself around is Mushu and Chang.”
“You’re cousin right?”
“Yes.” My phone started ringing. “Speak of the devil” I answered my phone. “Yes. I’m in the antique shop. Ok, I’ll be right out.” I hung up the phone and gave the girl a sad smile. “Well thank you for talking to me and letting me be myself.”
“Anytime, and Mulan?”
“Yes?”
“I think you should come out to your school. I have a strong feeling that everything will be okay.” I took her hand a squeezed it.
“Thank you.” Mushu pulled up in what could only be Jaq’s car. It was a red convertible, two-door and the music was blaring. Mushu got out of the car to greet Cricket.
“Mulan you ready to go?”
“Yep, oh this is Cricket. Cricket this is Mushu.” She blushed and waved at him.
“It’s nice to meet you.”
“Thank you for keeping my cousin company.”
“Oh, it’s my pleasure.” I looked at the two of them still holding hands. Love struck. I laughed to myself. Who knew Mushu would ever be interested in anything other than his art and laptop.
“Ah Mushu are you ready to go?” he blinked and dropped Jia’s hand.
“Ah. Yeah. It was nice to meet you, Cricket.” We got into the car and drove off. I turned to Mushu.
“Mushu, I have a plan, but I’ll need your help.” He grinned at me and I knew he was in.
