Over the next month I lived in the village. Heading out every morning to work on Alchemy with Alice, then I would go into the forest to hunt animals. I Kept three kills a day for myself and sold the rest to the village. To help while they trained new hunters. As my spells got stronger I was able to fight more animals a day. My skills improved drastically, and I gained 2 levels.

Sitting in my room, watching as the moon rose over the mountains in the distance. Thinking about all that had happened. Wondering what my brother was doing right now. He was all alone. Part of me wished that he could be here, that he was with me. Another part of me was happy that he was still alive. Though being reborn here wasn’t so bad. Maybe someday the goddess would bring him to this world.
“Your skills are leveling decently, but we cannot stay here. We have been lucky, your level is still too low, we need to move to an area with stronger monsters.”
“I agree, but there are valuable skills I have learned here. I have been able to secure enough herbs to practice on the road for a while. As well as a supply of vials to put them in. I will have to rinse them out and save them, but they will last as long as I’m careful. I wish my inventory was bigger, so I could carry more things. But that will come later, some point when I can enter a large city.”
“What will you do about the boy?”
“What do you mean?”
“The Apprentice, the one who figured out you were an arcane elf.”
“I don’t see an issue.”
“He wants to follow you, and while you could use a warrior, he is 17, an adult in this world. But he is level 10, you will pass him by quickly.”
“True, wait how do you know he wants to follow me? He hasn’t said anything to me.”
“I followed him after he mentioned that he knew you were an Arcane elf. Had he talked with his family about asking to follow you on your journeys. They are unsure because they were training him to become a new guard, but overall they cannot stop him, he is free to do what he wants. Do you want him to join you?”
“It would make traveling easier, being a caster it is always easier to level if you have someone to distract the monsters for you. Especially with some of the higher level spells. Arcane bolt is great, but I will outgrow it quickly, it won't level up forever.”
“No it won't, but it is a racial magic meaning it isn’t a standard tier 1 spell. Every rank up, you will get a chance to power up the spell, so when you get it to beginner rank 1 you will get an evolution option, though I am unsure what it would be. And while you will get stronger spells this one will help you for a while. You were very lucky that there were still arcane elves alive.”
“I know. Why did the goddess summon me here, is there some evil force plotting against the world and if so what can I do about it I’m such a low level.”
“You are, but you have the ability to grow. It is possible that the threat she has foreseen is years or even decades in the future. For now, we just need to focus on getting you stronger. Soon, I will have to return to the goddesses side, I am not able to follow you forever though I will be her messenger to you when she needs to speak, but cannot come herself.”
“What do you mean? You’re leaving me?”
“Not for a while yet. There is much you have to learn, but there are others that can teach you as well as I can. A young man from this continent will serve you well.”
“So you want him to come with us?”
“It makes the most sense, he knows his way around and if anything will be full of information about this continent. Once you get leveled up and can go to a large city, you can both join an adventures guild as a team, it will help mask your resurrections. In some areas, after you have been leveled, it will be better to pretend to be his slave, to avoid issues. Though that might not work if someone demands he sells you to him.”
“Why would I let myself pretend to be a slave?”
“In some areas you will not be able to enter because you are not human. As you know the nobles in this kingdom are not nice people. They are cruel and vindictive. Your pride is not as important as staying alive.”
Grumbling a little, but understanding he was correct. A knock at the door startled me, indicating they could enter, the young man entered the room.
“Hello, I had a question.”
“Okay,” I said smiling.
“I would like to follow you on your journeys. I have a feeling we only got part of your story. There is no way a village of Arcane elves was found and destroyed without widespread gossip. So that would mean either you are on an adventure, or something big is happening. I know you are only level 5, so my sword and shield would be of use to you. Also, your personality is kind. You didn’t have to tell us of the passing of our hunters, or given the items back to the families,”
“No, I didn’t, but to be myself. I had to. I’m surprised you would want to follow me though.”
“To be fair this isn’t a surprise to anyone, even my family was more surprised that I stayed in the village as long as I had. They were training me to be a guard, but everyone knew I want to go out and see the world.”
“My journey will not be easy, not do I even know where it will take me.”
“Fair enough,” he said grinning.
Glancing over at Alic, “Tell him if you want, but remember to be smart about who you tell and who they might tell.” Alic said.
“Is everything okay?” the young man asked.
“Yes, I’m sorry, I’ve never asked your name, how rude of me, I am Alex.”
“I am Eric Lore, and I want to be a knight.”
“It is wonderful to meet you, I was looking at Alic, trying to see if telling you of the perils of my journey would be a good idea.”
“Alic?” Eric asked his eyes widening as Alic showed himself.
“A messenger of the goddess,”
“He is my guide as I get used to this new world. The goddess wants me to grow stronger, because of a darkness she sense, though neither of us know what it is.”
“If an envoy is here, then you must be telling the truth, but why someone so low leveled.”
“Because of my knowledge and love of this world, when I died, she brought me here.”
Eric’s eyes widened and his jaw dropped. “Summoned here after you died,”
“It is a long story,” I said sheepishly.
“I bet, but there is so much to learn.”
“Yes, but if there is something targeting the world then that means if you are traveling with me you might be put in danger or killed, I cannot guarantee that you will survive if you come with me.”
“There is no guarantee that I won't be killed here, even if I don’t follow you. The hunters were a good group, for something to have killed them, means something could kill me. At least if I go with you, if I die then it will be for a good cause.”
“I like your resolve, but let's try to keep you from dying. The first order of business is to try and get me to a higher level, then to head into a larger town and set up base for a little bit, and join the adventurers guild. That will help with having to worry about dying.”
“True, I forgot about the holy light of resurrection that adventurers have. The divine blessing from the goddess. Churches are built around her blessings. We are to far from a divine blessing for any of us to be able to be resurrected. If the town was closer we might be able to get some clerics in this town, that could perform the right, but even then it isn’t easy to bring someone back, unless they have the blessing before they die. Are you Immortal?” He asked suddenly seeming to interrupt even his own train of thought.
“I’m sorry that was rude.”
“It’s okay, I can understand being curious, why do you ask?” I said motioning for him to continue.
“Well legends say that Arcane Elves are immortal, I was curious if it was true.”
“I have been told that they are immortal, but I have never met one to ask personally.”
“Right, it would be so cool if you were immortal. Any being can be gifted with immortality. Though it is very hard to get that blessing from a god. Even in the histories there are not many occurrences. Though supposedly an immortal can share their immortality, but it takes longer for them to resurrect after death. I’m not sure if that is true or just a legend.”
“Eric, I just realized, do you ever take your hat off?”
His checks reddened for a second and I thought I had angered him. Then he looked down and away. I took him in, slight build, black hair sticking out from under his hat, he was just shy of 6 feet. He had olive skin from all the time outside, and his eyes were an emerald color that I thought only the gemstone had.
“I don’t normally take my hat off, because I wasn’t born here like the others, I’m catkin,” he said taking his hat off and there were two black ears on top of his head.” His face was red, “I hide them to hide the fact that I’m different than everyone else.”
“As a catkin, wouldn’t a rogue be a better choice than a knight? As a race stealth is your strongest skill isn’t it?”
“The villagers wouldn’t trust me, that way. They nearly trust me now. Except my family. They love me, they wanted me to work on what I was good at. I was trying to join the village guard, but I don’t think they would have let me stay much longer, my skills were not advancing fast enough and I hadn’t learned any sword skills yet.”
“I’m sorry,” I said looking down.
I was sorry, I knew a lot about people judging you for something you couldn’t control. Whither it was our parents having money, them leaving it and the company to us, or my being bi. A lot of people seemed to have an issue with something. Though they loved my brother, I was sure there were things said behind his back as well.
In the game of Etis though I was able to leave a lot of that behind, I was sought out for my skills, but my skills also kept others at a distance. Jealousy of my power, wishing they had what I did.
“I know what it is like to have people judge you on something you cannot change.” I said quietly. “I would be happy to have you with me. Is there a way for you to change your skills if we go to a large town? Or will you have to stay a knight?”
“I might be able to re-roll, my stats, but that is expensive and it doesn't always work.”
“Why doesn’t it always work?”
“You pay for a blessing, but if the goddess does not grant the blessing then nothing changes.”
“Alic, would that be something we could ask the goddess when we leave the village. I know having a knight would be good, but if he can learn skills faster as a rogue then that might be beneficial, if Erick would like that of course.”
“A knight would be better for you right now, but if he can learn the dagger skill, he will still be able to distract enemies from you. If it is what you want or need the goddess might be willing to listen. Even I cannot say if she will respond, or what she will chose to do if you ask.”
Nodding, “Alright, Erick you will have a couple days to figure it out. Whatever you chose is fine,” I said smiling.
“Okay,” he said looking away.
I watched as he walked out of the door a few hours later. We would stay here three more days before leaving. I wanted to give cooking a try before we left. There was so much that needed to be learned.
