Ryder questioned me the entire way back to Blackhound about what went on between me and Odin. I refused to tell him because I wanted to tell everyone together. Odin gave me a day to announce the news to David before he sent wolves to come get me.
David was fuming when we finally returned to Blackhound. By the time we got back, the sun was rising, and Jeremiah had been found out. Alpha Cole called David about where his daughter was and of course, David didn't have a clue. Cassandra ran pass David to go to James. David didn't try to stop her.
"You could have been killed. What were you thinking?"
"We were thinking about James," Ryder fired back.
"This could possibly cause war."
"Alpha Cole is a stubborn wolf and you know it. He would never have seen reason."
"But trespassing onto his land? You even took Savannah with you who has no jurisdiction. You all are under pack name, but she is not."
"You don't need to worry about me, David," I said.
"Alpha Cole will try everything in his power to get even. He doesn't take well to being played and that's how he's taking it. If he can't attack them, then he'll attack you by association."
"He can't touch me, David, because I am under pack name. I belong to Duskhill."
"What?"
"Is that why Alpha Lancer wanted to talk to you alone?" Ryder asked, and I nodded.
"He was the one. He was the alpha I've been looking for and I am now his beta. He has given me a day to say goodbye to you all."
"How could you do this, Savannah?" David asked. "How could you go and join another pack like that?"
"It's not like we didn't know this was coming and he is the one. He is the alpha that I've been looking for. Just like James would follow you to the end of the earth, I shall follow him. I don't need your permission, David. I do not belong to you. I am not a Blackhound wolf. I am not your daughter." Fire burned in his eyes and he looked like wanted to say more to me, but what more could he say? I was right, and he knew it. He growled and stormed off.
"Of course you manage to get accepted to the one pack David can't stand," Malcolm said.
"It was bound to happen."
"I guess none of us really thought it would be so soon or ever. We've all grown attached to you," Lincoln said.
"Yeah we see you as one of us," Kyle said.
"Jeremiah is going to be crushed," Ryder mumbled.
"I'm sure you all will do a hell of a job telling him for me. If I tell him, he'll never let me go and I don't feel like putting his ass in the ground. I guess I better go tell James."
"You're leaving now?" Ryder asked.
"There's no point in delaying it and I don't want Odin sending his wolves. It's unnecessary. I also don't want to give Jeremiah the chance to give his two scents." I walked to David's, thanking the moon that he wasn't there. He was only going to make this goodbye harder than it needed to be. Cassandra and James were together, and they were talking when I arrived. They stopped when they sensed me approaching and looked up when I stood in the doorway.
"Don't worry, I won't be here long. I only came up here to say goodbye to James."
"Goodbye? Where are you going?" James asked.
"I found my forever home last night."
"Duskhill?" Cassandra gasped.
"Well I'm happy for you," James said, "and thank you for bringing my Cassandra back to me." His eyes welled up with so much happiness and appreciation. It made me angrier at Cassandra for leaving him in the first place, but what did I know about mates. I hadn't found mine yet. I felt a slight ache, but I tried to not let it get to me. The moon will bring him into my life when she does.
"See you around then," I said and left without making any eye contact with Cassandra. As I walked down the steps of David's house, I stopped when I saw Ryder sitting on the bottom step.
"I never thought I would be upset by you leaving," he said, and my features softened as I sat down beside him. "I remember when you first came here a few months ago and I just thought you were some no-good rogue."
"I remember," I said with a chuckle. "I had a lot of fun putting you in the dirt."
"You're the sister I never had, Savannah."
"And you're like another brother to me. I'm probably going to miss you the most, but it's not like we still can't link. The bond between us will never go away. My wolf recognizes you as her brother." He nodded with a huge smile that lit his face.
"Don't hesitate to link or call, Savannah. If anything happens, you come to me." I rolled my eyes.
"Don't become a mother hen like David."
"How can I not worry about my little sister going off to another pack?"
"Little? Since when was I your little sister? Why can't I be your older sister?"
"I'm the older than you, duh," he said, sticking his tongue out at me. I sighed and shook my head.
"I should get going."
"I'll run you to the border." We shifted together and ran towards the west border. The twins and Kyle caught up and joined us. This was our last run together. It was bittersweet, but I had to go. I had to return to my alpha.
My alpha.
I couldn't believe I found him. I couldn't believe that the stories my father used to tell were real. I hadn't given much thought to it like most things he told me when I was too young to really understand or find the value in his lessons. Back then, all I wanted was to be Kian's beta. It used to be me and Kian. There was no question because my father was his father's beta, and we wanted to be like them. We wanted to be a dynamic duo. When people thought of Kian, they thought of me. It's how it was growing up.
Then we got older.
We got older and things changed. Our views changed and we were no longer a team. Death after death caused a rift between us, a rift that we couldn't bridge together no matter how much we wanted it, or I wanted it. Kian drifted too far from me; he drifted to a place that was so dark that I could no longer see him. I tried. I swear to the moon that I tried to make him see the light again, but he was too far gone. He couldn't look pass the bloodshed that soaked Willow. He was obsessed with "justice" that he couldn't see what he was doing to his own pack. I couldn't stay. It drove me crazy. It drove my wolf crazy to be around him.
One day she had a pull to leave. Something was calling us, and I did try to ignore it, but then I remembered my father telling me to follow it. He called it instinct. We had to follow it. Our wolves were a part of us and they knew what we needed. I knew then that I could no longer be Kian's beta. I had to find my alpha, the alpha I was meant to follow and support. It was my purpose.
We reached the border and David was there waiting in his wolf form. He was huge. His wolf looked down at us with what looked like fatherly love. This one time I would let him be the mother hen he wants to be. I know he saw me as a daughter even though I didn't see him as my father. He cared and worried about me when he didn't have to. I know it was due to his loss. He rubbed his cheek against mine and I let him. My wolf accepted it.
"Don't forget about us, Savannah," he said.
