We waited for the credits to finish. It was one of those movies where you could wait until the end for an extra sneak peak of what's to come in the next movie of the franchise.
We were disappointed.
"Well, that was an interesting movie," Kam said as we were leaving the cinema.
"Interesting is the word."
I threw my still half-full popcorn tub in the bin. I guess I was used to having Kam steal the other half that I could no longer finish it on my own.
"Okay, well now that the movie part of our date is over, what do you want to get for dinner?"
The popcorn sure did fill me up.
"I'm not really hungry anymore," I replied, "maybe 珍珠奶茶 (zhen zhu nai cha)."
Kam showed me his biggest smile. He had this weird dreamy look in his eyes, the kind of look you give someone when they do something amazing and you can't help but admire them.
"I love it when you speak Chinese," he said.
English is the only language Kam knows how to speak, so whenever he hears someone speaking in another language he becomes deeply enamored. I'm not ashamed to admit that I use my trilingual skills to my advantage. Sometimes, I only have to say a few random words or phrases in Chinese to impress him.
"谢谢 (xie xie)," I responded while I tried to hide my grin.
"Hey now, you stop that. Unless you're going to share some kisses with me, you should stop it," he demanded. "Okay, you want pearl milk tea? Let's go before they close."
Kam definitely understands some of the things I say. I use certain phrases often enough around him that he now knows what they mean, even if he can't say them himself.
We then headed out onto the main street where the shops were.
Just as much as he was impressed by my language skills, I'm secretly impressed by how much he has picked up listening to me over the years.
