The Seraphim were proud creatures. Living in their floating palaces and gardens they believed themselves to be above concerns of those on the Ground. However, as most perfection goes, there were blemishes in their polished lives.
They were murderers.
Hyper-focused on ‘purity’ the word half-breed and mutt were never thrown about lightly, and if accused or found out, those involved with half-breed children and the child involved would often disappear.
It was illegal in the eyes of the High Council to have child with or to be a child of another species. The disappearances were never questioned, and often enough, selling out a neighbor a friend would lift your own status.
Children never lived long if they were different. No exceptions.
Until there was.
In a colony called Restless Waves, floating just near the edge of the vast ocean covering most of Mabilia, there was a women. Her name was Aspen, and born to fishermen, one of the lower class jobs, she was never expected to do much in her life.
She lived to defy expectations.
Her parents, loving and supportive people, were never really surprised when she announced her plan to leave Restless Waves. She said that she wanted to explore the Ground World, and learn the culture.
Her mother argued that there wasn’t any culture there, as it was mostly just trading posts cobbled together into towns. But Aspen insisted.
Her father reminded her that if and hopefully when she returned, she would be looked down upon and ostracized for ‘mingling’ with the Ground, though it wasn’t technically illegal. But Aspen insisted.
Wearing her parents down, they eventually agreed, and by the tender age of 18 Aspen followed the call of the Ground, spread her wings, and flew.
The trip to the World below took her almost two weeks, and exhausted as she was, she was ecstatic to arrive.
The sandy beach where she landed was so different from anything she had ever seen and she sunk her toes into the soft sands.
Her adventure was about to begin.
