The world is ending. They wanted to find us, rootle us out until they had all of us. The Enhanced. Searching, keeping their eyes transfixed on our every move, the authority had its eyes on us. I stared at the tattoo on my forearm, the spiky vine curling into a small circle. Two weeks after my mother died, color disappeared from my eyes. I could only see black and white. My mother told me that this was because I was an Enhanced. It was nearing the end of the world, and radiation swept across the globe, claiming a few youths as its own. They were called, The Enhanced. Everything about us was enhanced. Speed, strength, mind. Our life span was able to be taken, like money from a bank. You could drain us of our lives, or we could drain yours. Our eyes could only see black and white, but when our soulmates touched us, or we touched them, color exploded before our eyes.
No one knew what they were after. Why wipe us out? Why?
A year ago, when my mother died, I had found out a valuable piece of information. It wasn’t just the authorities after us. An organisation, A.S.H, seemed to be searching for us, too.
I had been running as fast as my legs could take me, before falling helplessly in front of a ramshackled house. It looked like the authorities has already invaded the place. I looked back to make sure that no one was following me and then slowly crawled through the front door. At last, I catched my breath and there, I heard a baritone voice. It sounded demanding and determined.
“Check this place again! No one leaves this place alive. Check all nook and cranny. You are not to stop until every floorboard is turned.”
I frantically looked around and saw a hole in the floor, it seemed as if it lead to something. Without thinking, I quickened my crawling pace to the hole and dragged along a ripped rug to cover it. I tried my best not to make any noise to avoid attracting their attention. The rickety old house was not the best place to crawl in, every step had a slight sound to it. I had stepped into the hole that was huge and quite obvious. I put the rag above me and checked that it covered my “tracks”. Looking around me, it was just a dead end. Being a curious 12 year old, I popped my head up till my eyes were above the ground of the old dilapidated house. There before me was a dark shadow, it was getting closer. I ducked my head so the ripped rug would not have a little bump --- my head. I sat down and took several quiet breaths.
“All clear.”
“A.S.H wolves reporting: North-East cleared.”
“H.Q received.”
The burning ashes from where I ran from had filled the room. The sound of footsteps faded, I brushed the ripped rug aside as I had coughed and slowly tiptoed my way to the entrance of the house.
Their shadows were nowhere to be seen. I sat down and started to wonder, why was it that they were coming after me? What was A.S.H? Questions filled my brain, I was really confused. I remembered that Mother had told me to run away, but she didn’t give me a reason. I was so unsure of where I was or who I was. I was vexed and tried to calm myself down by deep breathing. Nothing had seemed to calm me down. My sweat mixed with my tears as I slowly laid my back to the ground. The moon had taken over and the soft wind blew against my damp face as I cried myself to sleep.
