The sky was dark outside. Not a single star could be seen from the center of the city. It must have been because of all the lights that were turned on.
"What flavour do you want, Jun?"
Kam always got one of two flavours, a taro ice blend with pearls or a milk tea with pearls and jelly.
"Taro ice blend with pearls, don't worry, this one is my shout," I offered to pay because he had bought me popcorn before. Even though it was our first date, we're both men. What's the rule on who pays in this case? It's much fairer for us to just split the cost of things throughout the night.
I ordered our drinks, taro for me and milk tea for him. We didn't have to wait too long for our drinks to be made.
"You want to do it for me?" Kam handed me his drink.
With this type of milk tea, you have to pierce through the plastic lid using the straw. More often than not, Kam would stab his drink and spill some of it out of the cup. Some time during high school, he began handing his drink to me because he didn't want to make a mess.
I held the cup by the rim and swiftly pierced the lid with the straw. Clean, smooth, effortless.
"My hero," he joked.
Before handing it back over I took a quick sip of the straw.
"Hey, hey!" he protested.
"You're the one that said sharing was caring," I took another sip before returning it.
"You're a hypocrite, that's what you are," he looked down at his drink for a moment.
"What?" I asked.
"This is what people would call an indirect kiss isn't it?"
"Kam, this isn't the first time that we have shared drinks."
"I know, but now that we're dating, it's something that I think about now."
"If that's the case then we've probably indirectly kissed about 100 times by now."
"Wow, only our first date and we've already gotten that far!"
I lightly punched him on the arm.
"Haha, alright alright," he finally took a drink of his milk tea.
I didn't think much about it at first, but after Kam mentioned it, I thought that he was right. This was an indirect kiss.
I stabbed my straw into my drink and handed it over to him. He looked at me with a raised brow but I didn't say anything.
"What?" he asked as he leaned forward to take a sip of my taro ice blend.
I waited until he was done drinking before I withdrew my cup and took a big gulp for myself.
"I wanted one too," I muttered under my breath between sips.
A sly smirk appeared on Kam's face.
"You can have all the indirect kisses you want, Jun," he leaned in closer, "how about some direct kisses too?"
"No," I shrugged him off as I began walking away.
We were still out in public.
