10 Minute Writing Challenge: Childhood

10 Minute Writing Challenge: Childhood

May 25, 2018

Hallo! So, I have been challenged to do a ten minute prompt that reminds people of childhood. Hope you guys enjoy!

***

We were playing hide and go seek tag. I remember it was sunny out and I had my favorite Tweety Bird shirt on. Then again, all good childhood memories start out with nice weather and your favorite outfit. I had to be at least five because we were in running around on the woodchipped play ground at the JCC preschool center. They had just installed a new boat that to us seemed like Noah’s own ark. It’s probably replaced now with something more colorful and made of plastic.

I wouldn’t say I was the quickest on my feet when it came to tag, but I was clever. I knew the best spots to hide and I could fit my younger self into the tiniest of nooks in and around the boat. Of course, when my best friend was tagged, he knew exactly where to find me and all my wit was suddenly useless. I remember feeling my tiny little light up sneakers crunch against the ground as I ran from him. Laughter escaped my breath, but I had to keep reminding myself not to fall. Fall and you’re done. I turned my head around to see five fingers reach out and pull on my favorite shirt so tight I felt the collar against my neck.

It was finally my turn to get my friends and a devilish smile played on my lips as a plan brewed in my mind. I stood just underneath the ark and covered my eyes. I pretended to cry and all that was left to do was wait. One by one they all came out of their hiding spots, like deer timid to leave the forest. I knew they were watching me, unsure of what was wrong. Looking back, I probably wasn’t the best fake crier. My best friend was the one who went over to check on me and my smile grew wider as I quickly turned around and tagged him on the shoulder. Nobody saw it coming. Nobody saw me coming. I sprang into action, knowing I only had a short amount of time before their tiny legs would out run mine. I pushed off the boat and the laughter began again.

It was a little tricky because it had to be at least a page long and in that amount of time anything is hard. But, I like what I wrote and hopefully you guys did too.

Fun Fact: It has never rained in a town in the Atacama Desert of Chile called Calama.
