We were standing on the platform when the train made an ear-piercing screech as it came to a halt. To be honest, I was used to the noise when I was travelling into the city every day to attend university. But when I bought my own car, I stopped taking public transport and got used to the soft gentle purr of the engine. Now, the screeching sounded worse than before.
We hopped onto the train. It wasn’t too crowded at that time of night.
"Did you know that the trains in Sydney are double-decker?" Kam informed me as he sat down on one of the oddly patterned blue seats. "You can also adjust the orientation of the seats."
"When did you go to Sydney?" I asked.
I decided to sit across from him rather than next to him. Friends sit across from each other so they can face each other when they talk. Couples sit next to each other so they can hold hands and lean on one another. Should I have sat next to him?
"Last month. It was for work so I was only there for a few days."
If you've ever been on a train in Melbourne, you would know that there is not much room for two adults sitting across from each other to stretch their legs out without kicking one another.
"How was it?" I asked while stretching my legs out as far as I could.
"Good. I've never been to Sydney before that," Kam rubbed his foot against my leg. He was trying to play footsies.
I kicked his shin.
"Ow!" he retracted his legs away from mine. "Why??"
"You take up too much space."
"Jeez, fine!" Kam got up and moved over to my side. Now we are sitting like a couple. "Is that better? "
I nodded, "Yeah."
