Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Jun 01, 2018

The winds kept a constant blow causing the ropes attached to metal to swing back and forth. The clouds a dull gray obscuring any vision.

Engines wheeze and cough as a ship with rusted walls and squeaking wings descend deeper into the mist. The creaking of its joints gave the air an ominous feel as the ship itself looked abandoned and devoid of life. If not for the black smoke emitting from its rear nozzle it would almost seem that the ship was running on its own with anyone piloting it.

Within moments a docking platform could be seen embedded into a large mountain. Already, multiple ships were docked on top of the large platform they varied in size and lethality. The most common of ships that are dock are small three-man ships armed to the teeth accompanied by a single engine. The symbol of a woman with her arms replaced by feathered wings were painted on each ship signifying their house.

As the approaching ship descended closer to the platforms three large cannons emerged from the sides of the mountain they were disguised in rocks and plant life. All barrels were aimed at the ship the sound of a whirring noise grew from each cannon alarming any within the vicinity that they were arms and ready to decimate any foolish enough go against them.

Within the ship a single pilot sat in the cockpit slowly steering the ship down onto the platform doing his best not to show any aggravation. He began to click on a screen filled with symbols and commands, he quickly unlocked the ship’s docking legs.

Once safely on the ground, the pilot tap in the last few commands. The canons begin to fold back into the ground allowing the pilot to let out a breath of relief.

The begins to land on a vacant position on the platform. The pilot looks at the security screen to see two guards approaching with their rifles at the ready. He lets out a sigh and clicks down onto a glowing red button and begins to speak into a microphone.

“Captain we’ve successfully docked,” he says and with his finger still on the button he turns his head to look at the main screen. With his other hand, he pulls up another window with a list of supplies. “We’re going to have to pick up fuel and provisions.” Releasing his finger from the button he and waits for a response. When no answer came, he leans over the microphone and repeats what he said.

Once more he waits for any sort of response from the speakers above him. He lets out a sigh getting up from his seat and walks out the pilot room. The door opens with a hiss sliding itself open for the exiting patron.

The pilot made his way down a hallway in search of his captain. As he ventured deeper into the ship the floor began to show signs of life or well what was life.

Empty boxes and rip wrappers of instant meals were littering the ground. The deeper the pilot went in the less of the floor was visible.

Finally, he walks in front of a metal door with the words “captain’s quarters” carved into the metal.

He knocks on the door a few times waiting a few minutes for the door to slide open. Letting out another sigh, he being to type in a command on the door’s control panel and manually opens the metal door.

The room was dark with only the light from the doorway to illuminate certain parks of the room.

The man walks inside and taps a button next to the entrance activating the lights in the room to turn on.

Metal and garbage are scattered across the floor as if a tornado came through the room. On one side of the room was a bed with a large lump in the center.

“Captain?” The man calls out walking past the bed and making his way towards a pile of rumbling metal scraps and pieces of mechanical prosthetic arms.

“Do you mind turning off that light?” Came a voice from the metal pile causing various pieces to shake and smaller screws to fall to the bottom.

The man walks over and looks over the pile and sees the owner of the voice, a woman with her arm covering her eyes. Her left arm was missing leaving only a stub of an arm with a metal ring encircling at the end. Hair a brown messy clump rests on her head with a few screws tangled within.

“Lye, would you please,” she starts her voice low. “Shut off the lights and piss off!” She roars the last part.

The man name Lye wasn’t fazed by her words as he keeps on staring at his captain. Crossing his arms and tapping his foot, Lye stares down at his captain who is now flipped over with her back facing him. Ignoring her request, he clears his throat and pulls out of list of supplies they need.

“Ma’am we’re in need of food rations, fuel, ammunition, and the ship’s engines needs repairs.” His words seem to have fallen on deaf ears as the sound of snoring erupts from the pile. Letting out a sigh, Lye walks over to a bin of screws of various sizes and picks it up and walks back to his spot in front of his captain. In one sweep motion, he flips the bin over his captain releasing all the screws within like water from a bucket.

A scream came from his captain as she was buried by the weight of all the screws causing her distress. Her one arm springs up to hold off her tormentor.

“We have an hour before the supplies we’re looking for are sold out.” He says walking away. “I’ll get the fuel and rations and you can get ammunition and supplies for the repairs.” With that he leaves the room.

“Stupid pilot, stupid list,” the captain glares up at the ceiling blowing a strand of hair away from her eyes. “Don’t forget who the captain is!” She yells staring back at the door.

She pulls herself up from her last night’s sleeping arrangement and walks over to her bed. Various articles of her clothing are clumped all over the surface. The main article of clothing on the bed are brown sleeveless leather vests. Most of them had their edges singed off and bullet holes decorated the sides.

Without a second thought, she picks up a random vest and puts it on and turns to a mirror in her room. With a click of her tongue she winks at herself and walks out of her room. Once outside she notices a black beanie on the floor next to the door.

“That’s where I left you.” She says picking up the beanie and putting it on. Flipping the front edge of the hat up she moves down the hallway.

When she reaches the door to the cock pit they open with a hiss allowing the captain inside. Walking over to her pilot, she rests her one arm on the back of his chair and watch him tap away at the screen in front of him.

“What you doing?” She asks.

“I’m scanning the area to find out what family owns this rock.” Lye answers and just then a symbol a winged woman appears she wore a crown and a skull hung around her neck.

“Harpies…I hate the Harpies.” The captain growls. “What we dealing with here?”

With his scans complete, Lye taps a button and a map appeared on the screen with smaller images of the Harpies logo surrounding the area.

“Well, there are only a handful of guards with only two headhunter ships,” Lye says pointing at each threat on the screen. “Our biggest concern are the cannons,” he turns around to face his captain. “If we don’t cause a ruckus then we can be in and out with our supplies.”

“Perfect, we’ll get this done without a problem.” The captain says walking out of the pilot room.

“Somehow I don’t believe you.” Lye says getting up from his chair and following her.

The two head over to the ships weapons room to prepare. With a hiss of the door, both crewmembers saw that the room was nearly empty. Empty boxes littered the floor and hollow gun shells are scattered everywhere.

Lye walks over to the gun cabinet and pulls out the only two double barrel pistols. He does a quick inspection the of two fire arms and walks over to his captain who was waist deep in a crate in search of bullets. He stands next to her waiting for her to resurface from her search.

“Aha, there you are my pretty.” Pushing herself back up, she pulls out a robotic prosthetic arm in her mouth and a handful of bullets in her hand. She walks over to a work bench with lye coming up behind her. Dropping the bullets onto the table, she twists the robotic arm on the metal ring where her left arm should be. With a satisfying click, she flexes and rotates the now attached arm doing her own tests on it.

“Seven bullets.” Lye says as he takes four and hands her three.

She bends her left wrist revealing a socket for the bullets and loads them. Flipping her wrist back is was followed by the sound of a click and a few gears turning.

Lye loaded his four bullets into his pistols. He then aims at various objects in the room checking if the sights were goods. He turns to his captain who was looking at herself in the mirror posing as if her picture was being taking on multiple angles. She flexes her right arm and shows off her left mechanical one.

“Have I ever said that I make this look good?” She asks.

“Make what look good?” Lye asks.

Without turning around, she motions to herself in the mirror as she slightly turns and angles herself.

Lye rolls his eyes as he walks out of the room leaving his captain to herself.

“Hey! Answer me when I ask you a serious question like that.”

The pilot stands in front of the ship’s entrance and taps a passcode to open its doors. A load growl came from the ship and its large doors slowly began to open. Lye was soon greeted by two guards who wore the Harpies insignia on their shoulders and sides of their helmet.

The guards spear tipped gun barrels were aimed to his face. Their faces were obscured by the dark brown masks and green goggled eyes.

“Who are you and what is your business here?” One of the guards ask with a muffled voice. He shoves the barrel of his rifle in Lye’s face pushing it against his cheek.

“We’re just simple merchants.” Lye answers. “Just here to sell some goods.”

Both men turn to each other then back to Lye.

“What goods?” One of them asks. “All tradeable goods must be inspected before release.

“Of course, let me show you,” Lye waves them in. “Just inside here.”

The guards walk inside the ship with Lye following behind them. From outside of the ship a few muffles and grunts are heard followed by a loud thud.

Lye walks back out of the ship whipping his hands against each other. Behind him was his captain who was cracking her knuckles.

“Well nothing wakes a person up like knocking a few heads.”

“Hmm I was expecting those two to have more jewels on them.” Lye says as he investigates the two small brown bags. He tosses one towards his captain who catches it with her robotic arm.

“Remember food and fuel only and nothing else.”

She turns around to face Lye crossing her arms as she stares at him.

“You do know I’m the captain correct? I’m the one who’s supposed to tell you what to do.”

“And I’m your pilot, engineer, and first mate.” He says walking past her. “Now come on before they notice those two-missing let get what we need and get out of here.”

The duo makes their way towards a large elevator to descend to their destination.
