“Jeez where is this chick?” I had gotten a call from my father a few days ago.
“An old friend of mine’s daughter is transferring to your school; I expect you to look after her and make her feel welcome.” He gave me her flight information and told me to go pick her up from the airport. So here I am waiting for a girl I’ve never met before… I don’t even know what she looks like. I tore a piece of paper from a notebook that I had in my book bag and made a sign with her name on it. The only thing my dad said about her is that she had brown hair and that her nose will be in a book. Who walks around with their nose in a book? Her gate number was finally called so I raised my sign and looked for her. I watched as people filed out of the gate, it wasn’t long before I spotted her, or who I guessed was her. She has long brown hair that hangs past her shoulders, light pink lips and big brown, puppy dog eyes. She wore big chunky brown boots, black skinny jeans and a green plaid, men’s button down shirt. She only carried two bags with her; one looked like a small suitcase and the other was a brown suede shoulder bag. Her nose wasn’t stuck in a book but she did carry one with her. She walked straight towards me with a solemn look on her face. As she got closer I could see that her oversized shirt hung to her knees and the sleeves covered her hands. She had the shirt completely buttoned up to the collar, but it was so big that it hung down from her neck. By the time I was done taking her all in she was standing in front of me.
“Hi, you must be Adam. I’m Belle.” She held out her hand to me and I shook it.
“Um, yeah. Do you have any luggage to get?”
“No, Dad had it all sent to the school.” I nodded and we started walking towards where I parked the car. I could hear her following behind me, her shoes dragging agents the floor. We walked out to the parking lot and down a few isles to my car. Dad had bought it for me for my sixteenth birthday, as a sorry I’m too busy to visit you on your birthday hope this makes up for it gift. Whatever, it’s a nice car. I popped the trunk and took her bags from her, setting them in the trunk. After closing the trunk I walked over to the driver’s side and slid into the soft leather seat. Belle slid into the passenger seat and buckled up. She looked like she had been swallowed up by her baggy clothing, making her look smaller than she already was. I pulled out of the parking lot and started the long drive back to the school.
“Do you like going to the S.S.R.K.?” I glanced over at Belle, who hadn’t said a word since we said hi when I first picked her up.
“Yeah, I guess.”
“What do you do for fun?” She was looking out the window, her hands in her lap; she looked sad and tired.
“I play football right now but I do other sports too.”
“I don’t know much about sports.”
“Haven’t you ever played a sport before?” she shook her head no.
“I was homeschooled my whole life. This is my first time at a real school, I’m kind of a homebody.” I nodded, she has no experience with people. I wonder how she’ll do here. When we arrived at the school she pulled a piece of paper out of her pocket with her room number on it. I helped her carry her one small suitcase up to the third floor to her room. She knocked on the door and we heard a loud thump, a moan and then some scrambling. The door opened and a girl dressed in a long green skirt and yellow shirt stood there. She was thin yet curvy with long brown hair that she had pulled into a messy bun on top of her head. Blue eyes looked at us through thick rimmed glasses.
“Hey Jane, I didn’t know this was your room.” Jane smiled at me.
“Oh, hi Adam, yeah it is. How can I help you?”
“This is Belle, she’s your new roommate.” Jane looked Belle over and smiled at her.
“Hi, it’s nice to meet you.”
“It’s nice to meet you too.” I nodded and reached into the room setting the suitcase inside the room.
“Okay, you two girls have fun. Belle if you need me here’s my number.” I handed her a piece of paper that I had written my number on and walked away.
