Kane~ June 9
"What do you mean you own the entire town?" Roman demanded.
"I mean exactly that," I say with a straight face. "Technically the whole town is on private property. It's a bit hard to explain, but basically, this town is in my territory. Because my pack isn't big enough to run a city this big, we let humans take up residence and work here as well. Only a handful of them knows about us though." I scratched the back of my head as I try to think about the easiest way to explain this. I never paid much attention to how all this stuff worked. I always let Derik handle all of it. I'm really regretting it now.
"Um, since it would be too suspicious to have vast stretches of private property to hunters, packs will make an arrangement with the government. We get 60% of the profits from the businesses and tax collection, and they leave us alone in exchange for protecting the town and its citizens from danger. Whether its rogues or other humans." I feel like I'm just rambling at this point. Is any of this making any sense to them?
Owen looked like he understood but the look on Romans face was unreadable. I fidgeted in my seat while waiting for their reaction and scratching under my eye. It wasn't every day you find out your best friend wasn't human and incredibly wealthy on top of that. I had avoided telling Roman about my family and how well off I was because I had been hurt too many times by people trying to get close just because I had money. So I pretended to work at the hospital to see if people would still want to be my friend if they thought I wasn't rich. I may be an Alpha of a fairly strong pack, but I still get lonely, okay?
Roman blinked a few times before shaking his head and giving me an annoyed look. "Wait a minute," He raised his hand and shook his head again. "Are you telling me you're essentially rich?"
I gave a slow nod. Here it comes. Please don't be like everyone else. Once people find out you have money they always treat you different. They're overly nice to you for a while then before you know it they're asking you for favors. I didn't think Roman was like that but…
"You lying bastard! All this time I've been treating you to drinks and food thinking you were just scraping by with the way you dress and that run down piece of junk you call a truck!" Roman yelled while pointing an accusing finger at me.
"Hey! Don't talk bad about my truck! She runs just fine thank you!" I defended.
"Oh yeah? Then why hasn't the AC worked in it since I met you? And why are you always having to work on it? You spend more time taking it apart and putting it back together then you do actually driving it." He jabbed with a raised eyebrow.
I pointed my finger at him and started to say something to disprove his claims but paused. There was nothing I could say against them. Every bit of that was valid. I pursed my lips and brought my pointed finger up to scratch my ear. "Fine. I'll admit that she's a little old and needs a little bit of work sometimes."
Roman gave me a look that seemed to say, 'a little?'. His head was tilted to the side a little, and he had an eyebrow arching up enough to almost disappear into the fringe of his dark red hair. I rolled my eyes and threw my head back. "Fine! She needs a lot of work a lot of the time! But she is not old." I told while jabbing a finger at him.
Roman shook his head while Owen let out a soft chuckle. "I think 20 years is a bit old for a truck don't you?" Roman asked.
I snorted and waved my hand dismissively at his words. "Oh please! My baby is a Toyota. She'll run forever as long I give her the proper love and attention she needs."
My friend rolled his eyes at me. "Whatever," He huffed. "But seriously," Roman returned his gaze to me. "You own all of Mirfield? Like you run it?"
I nodded slowly. "For the most part, yeah. Like I said, It's complicated." I told him. I really didn't want to go into detail what all it took to run a town like Mirfield not just because it would take hours but also because I could see it in Romans eyes that he still processing everything.
Thankfully though, I didn't have to try and explain anymore because there was a knock on the door. I leaped at the chance to get up and rushed to the door. I knew it had to be Derik and opened the door. My Beta gave me a quick nod before peering around me to see inside the house.
"So," Derik started. "Just to get this straight, the rogue showed up at Roman's house, and now Roman wants him to stay here, correct?" I nodded in response. "Right, which leads to my next question, What exactly does Roman think is going on? Did he see anything? What did you tell him?" Derik rambled out.
I let out a long sigh and pressed the heal of my palm to the bridge of my nose. "He knows, Derik. He saw Owen's eyes and mine. I had to explain everything to him."
The look Derik gave me was one of complete surprise. He knew about my vow to never bring Roman into our world. "Oh, hows he taking it? And whos Owen?" He asked.
Letting my hand fall to my side I replied, "The Lycan and he's taking it much better then I thought he would. He... he didn't try to run when I explained things or when he saw me shift." My voice got quiet with the last words. I still wasn't sure how well Roman was actually taking things, but he didn't run from me... yet at least.
