“Kit?” Sadira asks gently, snapping me out of my flashback.
They were coming more and more often.
“Y-Yeah. I’m fine. I just- um, I haven’t really. Told anyone, in a really long time.” I run a hand through my hair. Avery, Ariana, and Sadira all just look at me with suspicion.
“Well then, congrats Kit.” Avery high-fives me.
“If you ever want to talk, we are all here.” Sadira pats me, then pushes a bottle of Gatorade™ my way.
“Thank you,” I awkwardly accept the Gatorade™. I still feel a little dehydrated from being sick, not too long ago.
Yesterday? I think it was yesterday.

I slap a lid onto a cup, write the name on it, hand it to a customer.
“Are you sure?? Young people are usually pretty confused about this kind of thing, I’ve read about it-”
I flinch violently, almost spilling scalding coffee onto my hand.
“Whoa there!” Ethan hurries over, grabs the cup and completes the order. He sets a hand on my back and leads me off to the backroom. “You OK? You seem kinda out of it today.”
“Yeah. Yeah, I’m fine.” I shake my head and look up at him. We’re standing so close I can make out streaks of gold in his eyes. Have those always been there? “Yeah. Um. Thanks for asking.”
