“Uhm, excuse me, but I don’t really understand what you’re talking about. And I’m sorry to tell you, but I don’t understand what your class is about ‘cause I don’t feel anything in my chest. So I stopped listening. I started drawing and wasn’t paying attention to this room at all, so how can I possibly have used magic?”
Surprised, but still with great anger in his face, the man turns around and points at something laying on the floor next to my desk.
“So how do you explain that this monster was created by the light coming from your body?”
I stand up and walks the few steps needed to reach the animal and sits down next to it. Immediately I recognise it. It’s Drawiel.
“WHAT THE HELL HAVE YOU DONE?!” I scream. “IS SHE DEAD? YOU CAN’T JUST DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT! Drawiel, please wake up, please you can’t be dead…” I lay down next to her and embrace her big body with my arms, crying and pleading her to wake up. Saying anything good I can come up with about her. And that’s a lot. I don’t see that my new classmates leave the room while whispering and pointing at me. I don’t notice that the teacher as well leaves me laying on the floor. I don’t even remember where I am before Seth enters the room. When he sees me on the floor he directly runs to sit next to me.
“Hey, what’s wrong Rez? You shouldn’t be crying on your first day!” he says while trying to wipe away the tears from my face, but since a lot more stream down it’s pretty pointless.
“Th-they k… k… killed her…” I cry, turning my face to Drawiel’s fur to hide my red eyes.
“She’s beautiful…” Seth murmurs. “What would they kill her for? It seems useless to me… You sure they killed her? Maybe they just made her concious. You know, there might be a way to wake her up if they made her like, paralyzed.”
“There is?” I ask, looking up at his face again. “You… think they didn’t… kill… her?”
“Truly, I don’t know, but I don’t think anyone here can make a deathbringing spell yet and therefore I think they just made her unable to move. Will you let me help you?”
I nod and let him pull me up so we stand next to each other. Softly he puts his arm around my neck and guides me towards the back of the classroom where a desk is placed. It’s loaded with different tools, bottles and substances in different colours. He explains that after learning to use your magic you’re supposed to use it to create stuff, like light-spheres and your own wand. Since that’s made here, everything they need to make a healing potion is supposed to be in the room. No more than a minute later Seth has grabbed everything he thinks we need, while I explain what happened, and we’re ready to start working. As if he was born a teacher with a saint’s patience he guides me to make everything right and explains how and why every substance is used. When I’m about to do something wrong, he kindly corrects me without being mad or panicking. In a few minutes he teaches me to use my magic better that the old man had done during the entire lesson. Some time later it is at last done and he smiles widely at me.
“See? I told you. You do have magic in your blood. No one else would have been able to make a potion like this during their first year. No less on the first day!” He winks at me and I can’t help but smile at him even though I still feel like I’m going to break every time I look at Drawiel whose fur is getting less blank for every minute that goes. “Alright Rez, you ready to perform some more magic? ‘Cause you need to use magic while pouring the liquid right between her eyes.” Hesitantly I nod and look scarily at him. “I’ll help you as much as I can,” he says, “Though you have to do this quite a lot on your own, since… well… you were the one that created her… You’re like her… guardian angel… First, pour three drops exactly in the middle, then let your light run through your fingers like the river flows through the rocks on the bottom. Now, this is the hardest part, you have to feel inside yourself. Find the magic that will keep the light in place even though you’re no longer holding it.” I close my eyes and start search in my body, though it doesn’t take long. Almost directly I feel a sensation in the very back of my neck and I know that’s what I need. With my mind, I will the source of magic to open and flow to my hands where it connects with my blood red light. I lower my hands and open my eyes to see that the light is still there. “Excellent Rez, now just two things more left to do. The rest of the potion needs to…” before he finishes I’ve already ran the rest of the liquid into Drawiel’s head. Then I without guidance know what to do. Even though I don’t really know why, or what I’m doing, I use the magic that just grew stronger inside of me and directs it towards Drawiel. A little later I let all my magic fade and steps back, exhausted. Seth catches me right before I fall backwards and carries me to lay on a table. “Rez, that was amazing!” he smiles at me. “Anyone saying you can’t use magic must be crazy! You really are a natural!” I have to hit him in his stomach to stop him from complimenting me.
“Seth, I… We don’t know if it worked yet. Is she awake?” I still feel too weak to sit up, so I try just to turn my head but I can’t see her anywhere.
“Yeah, she’s awake…” he answers. “She’s over there.” He points towards the front of the room and very well, there she’s standing. Based on the look in her eyes I can tell she’s really scared and confused. With a great effort I sit up and immediately feel dizzy but I ignore it and calls for her.
“Drawiel! Here, it’s alright. The mean people are gone. You’re safe now. Come here. We won’t hurt you. I promise.” When she hears my voice she gets calmer at once and hurries to me. “Hey there girl. Are you feeling fine?” I ask. Then the door opens and the old teacher enters the room. When he sees our newly saved creature his eyes get wide.
“What is that doing up walking? It is dangerous! Take care of it immediately!”
“Please, mr. Ugoya, listen to us.” Seth says. “This is Drawiel. She’s not dangerous, she’s a Soredy. I swear she won’t make any kind of problems to the school. Can’t you see how beautiful she is? And didn’t you see how Ms Tronder broke down when she found her unable to move? Didn’t that make you realize that they’re friends? And I’m quite sure that someone that can make a Rilivy potion and apply it correctly on the first day of learning magic would be able to feel if a creature is evil or not.”
“She did the potion, mr. Frilyze? I do not think so. She did not even pay attention to my class, she admitted it herself, how could she be able to use any magic at all? Any less make a potion like that? No, no, I know it was you, do not think you can fool me!”
“You have seen me trying to make the Suiler, and I have never made it. What makes you think that I could do it now?”
“Impressing on her… though I do not understand why you would like to. I will make sure she gets thrown out of here. She is too dangerous. Summoning a monster in the middle of the class. She is out of here tonight, mark my words. Now let me take care of the monster.”
“No!” Without thinking I raise my hands and let magic flow into the room. When I lower them again the teacher is all covered in ice and can barely move. “Don’t you dare touch her again! Next time you try hurting her, I promise it will be more than just a little ice that’s thrown at you.” I anxiously look into Seth's eyes to see if I went to far but he just smiles at me with a spark in his eyes. Then I black out.
Light that’s way too bright reaches my eyes and I moan while trying to turn away from it only to realize I can’t.
“Oh, good. You’re awake.” I hear a voice saying and even though I recognize the voice I can’t place it. Something cold and wet touches my forehead and I instantly feel better. “Next time you try doing magic, would you mind stay within your limit for me, please ms. Tronder?” I nod. “Good. Now, there’s a few students that have waited for you to wake up. Is it okay if I let them in?” Once again I moan but even though I’d prefer to get some time alone to sort things out in my head I nod. No more than five seconds pass before the room is filled with girls from my class - girls I didn’t even know I knew. Every single one of them talk at the same time and I directly feel the headache approach again.
