“Kaelene…KAELENE!”
Those words snapped her to attention bringing her back to the reality at the local java shop while dusk was slowly arriving. Staring out the solid window blank-faced at the suburban street ahead, she realized she was the only one who was standing up from the low top tables and staring off into space while other patrons looked over in her direction warily.
“What is that girl standing up for?”
“I know right she’s been like that for way more than a few seconds, wonder if she saw something weird.”
The other customers continued staring at her she becoming red-faced as she took her seat.
“What are you all staring at!” girl seated in front of her started smashing the keyboard of the laptop in front of her, “Are you guys that curious about other peoples situations? Geez! Can’t a couple of girls enjoy some burnt coffee in peace?”
Kaelene nudged her best friend who was now looking at the speckled faced man across the cafe sipping his Americano like she wanted to rip him and everyone in the café open for even looking in their line of vision. “Cal! relax its OK. I don’t know why you always get so worked up whenever this happens.” Kaelene said gripping her friend's arm across the table making sure to make eye contact eye, whilst trying best not to make look at the deep v-line that plunged in Callisto’s perfect chest.
Gods how Kaelene always slightly envied her from their adolescent days; she has a face and body that has always gotten her anything she wanted. Almond-shaped puppy brown eyes, sun-kissed skin, long blonde hair and perfect cherry lips that make even the stuffiest of men wag their tails in her direction. Despite her flashy appearance though, she’s always been there for Kaelene; an unhindered loyalty that’s been apparent since high school together. But it’s not the men Kaelene’s been worried about lately or ever even… it’s currently the awful history paper the two girls had due for finals for online classes that night and haven’t started. Well, Kaelene hasn’t started. Callisto, on the other hand, had one of her boy toys write her a seamless one in the span of a few hours and offered Kaelene to just use her paper to turn in, so she would get another good grade because of her friends' great connections. Before a deep sigh, Calisto gave Kaelene a few pats and inched closer.
“I know your trying to not look at my chest Kae, however I must say I’m surprised at your forwardness” Callisto said with a bat of her lashes and moved forward, even more, allowing more of a peak than her Kaelene ever wanted to see and the blond cackled harshly in contrast to her looks.
“Gods I never get tired of doing that,” she said as she wiped a few tears of laughter away while sending over a completed two thousand word essay.
“Geez Cal I can’t take this from you,” Kaelene said trying to burn out the image of the braless woman from her mind “it feels wrong”. Callisto looked at a beloved friend and crinkled her nose. “Girl its alright I know… you have a lot of family stuff going on, along with dealing a lot with your dizzy spells that come and go more often lately, just let me do this for you! Plus, I have another guy who typed up another paper that I need to go thank in a few minutes.” her sentence ended with a vixens wink.
“I would expect nothing less from you Cal,” Kaelene chuckled and got up from her seat pushing in her chair, stuffing her own thick laptop in her satchel ready to let Callisto go off to boy number eighty-five before a tender hand was now on hers and brown eyes looked at her with slight worry.
“Call me when u get home ok? Don’t talk to strangers, walk where there are street lamps... and try to find me a decent guy ok? And maybe you one yourself as well ok?” The words flew out Callistos mouth that now grinned wide before getting up herself and walking out on pink pumps already dialing on her for the mystery man who gifted an A+ paper.
Kaelene sighed and looked to her own feet covered in her worn black sneakers and grinned, yea sure who would want such plain girl like me she thought…. she looked at her dingy flip phone and gasped the time, shit! It was getting darker faster than usual and she had to hurry home before an overprotective brother gave her a speech of a lifetime about coming home late... again
She made her way to the familiar semi-empty sidewalk and began her walk home, only a couple blocks, no need to call a taxi even when it was dark, after all with what money would she pay for it. As Kaelene bounded down the cement trail, the street lamps became dimmer and flickered on and off repeatedly. Of course, the government wouldn’t want to spend their resources on fixing neighborhoods that didn’t have luxury cars and high-rises. Always leaving for unsafe situations which Kaelene was perfectly capable of taking care of herself from.
But she spoke too soon and that’s when she heard it passing the dark alleyway near a halfway dead street lamp The final one that lights her way and leads her home sweet home.
A muffled scream of what seemed to be female and the drop of a body sounded not seconds after a few feet in front of her.
Every fiber in Kaelene’s body hurt and a painful sting on the back of her neck started as she could only stand frozen at the sight of a woman’s face that looked in sheer ecstasy with fresh copper smelling the blood that trickled out of her sockets. Kaelene was shaking with pure fear, she’s dealt with the local flashers and wannabe muggers from time to time but never anything like this. It was like continuous warnings flashed in her brain with only one message in mind, run.
She took a step back, and another heart racing before seeing what looked like a dark figure in the shadows, close behind a flickering light where the feet of the woman's body neared. All she could make out from the tall figure was nothing but darkness as it turned around as if slightly allowing Kaelene to see the rounded words that came out of its mouth…
RUN.
