It had only been an hour since she began sitting next to him and already he hated it. Everyone was looking at her and it was only a matter of time before they noticed he existed again. They went through a few classes revising the basics of monster hunting. Elijah didn’t have any ambitions in life he just wanted to live a day to day life but he knew that he could only do one thing. That was to kill monsters. It’s not that they did anything wrong but that’s the way he was brought up. He was looking out his window when he felt a sudden gaze land upon him he looked closely at everything taking note of every detail then he looked to the forest below and his eyes met ‘its’ eyes what was it? Why was it there? The eyes were followed by a shadowy figure then it stood on two of its four legs at that point it was at least two and a half meters tall. Elijah jumped up immediately and looked at it again trying to figure out what it was.
“Elijah what’s wrong” the teacher questioned
“Oh well there is something out there sir” he responded whilst pointing everyone rushed to the windows and screams were heard throughout the classroom. People collapsed onto the knees while others pulled out their phones to capture a shot of the beast. The teacher called the office and explained what had happened. An alarm started blaring from the speakers than a warning.
“Please stay in your classrooms there has been a monster spotted it is estimated around a B3 class range I repeat stay in your classrooms and wait for any further orders. Thank you!” Elijah looked at the figure again and it was still staring right at him. He sat down then the beast did as well. The Monster Hunting Organization or MHO for short had arrived at the scene and whilst they got out the monster shrunk into the shadows trying its best to slip away. The attempt was very successful. The MHO looked surprised but also scared to see it disappear. When the classes started again Elijah looked out the window at the spot where the monster was spotted.
“Elijah…” a voice whispered
“Elijah!” it said louder but still in a whisper. Elijah turned to see Emily looking at him. She smiled then starting to speak
“What sort of monster do you think that was?” she questioned. To Elijah it looked like she was desperate to start a conversation. He hated that, so to avoid any more conversation he turned to the front of the class a started to listen to the teacher for once trying his best to ignore her.
“Hey! Are you ignoring me?” she said. He had no intention of replying so she asked again. Now knowing that she was not going to receive a response she stopped and started paying attention to class again. He could tell she was annoyed at him but he wasn’t going to talk to her, he didn’t like her anyway. But she was the only person to remember his name or even talk to him. He shook his head trying erase his respect for her.
After school as soon as he walked out the gate he felt uneasy there was something about the walk home that made his gut twist into a knot. He tried to ignore it and started his routine walk home when Emily appeared just ahead of him looking at him.
‘Maybe this was that uneasy feeling I had’ he theorized.
“Hey, let’s walk home together” she insisted.
“No thanks I don’t want to.” He responded without hesitation. She stood there for a little while he walked past her then grabbed his arm.
“You know there is a monster around here now so wouldn’t it be better to walk with someone for protection” Just as she said that Derek appeared from behind her and joined the conversation
“Yeah Emily I will walk you home so you don’t have to worry” he said. Derek wasn’t weak at all he was the champion of fight club at school and had the body of a veteran soldier. She looked at him then let go of Elijah’s arm.
“I suppose that will work thanks…” she said in a disappointed tone and walked away from Elijah with Derek at her side. Elijah watched for a few seconds in relief then started his own venture home again. The uneasy feeling, he had, had not yet disappeared. He felt like he was being watched and looked around paranoid of what was to come.
He was nearly home when all of a sudden from behind him he heard a screech and then a shadowy figure jump out from the woods. It was on all fours and had red eyes that stared straight into his soul. Elijah looked at it closer but there was no way to identify it. It had a shadow as a body so it was an unidentified monster and gave off an aura that reeked of danger. Elijah stood there in awe looking over the beast in a way it was very beautiful it was nearly a meter and a half when on all fours then it stood up on two feet let out a roar that echoed and attacked his ears. Elijah had just realized what was happening and before he knew it he was running through the streets while dialing his phone attempting to call the MHO. He was a block away from his house when all of a sudden he felt a sharp pain in his leg. He let out a cry of pain and fell over. As he turned to look at his legs he noticed that the beast wasn’t near him yet he looked at his leg to see what was wrong. Lodged in his leg was a spear made of shadow. A blood pool was forming around Elijah. He looked back again and the monster was right up next to him it had the figure of a bear and was inching closer. It swung its huge paw at Elijah’s good leg, his right leg and had a clean cut through. He leg catapulted across the air into the forest next to him. He screamed as the pain went rushing through his body. He could no longer think straight fear and pain had taken control of his body and mind. He started thrashing about and grabbed the spear lodged in his leg. He ripped it out and stabbed the monster straight through its head. The blood trickled from the monster onto Elijah and traced his lips. He tried to drag himself a bit further home but the blood made him lose grip of the ground and his hands slipped his head made contact with the ground making him dizzy and light headed. He had lost a lot blood and slowly his eyes started to close.
