Apocalyptica: Vector's Edge

The Heart Of Vector!

The Heart Of Vector!

Jul 10, 2018

Death? Fear? Juan was far too used to such things. It wasn't that he was afraid of dying, quite the contrary. He probably valued his life more than anyone else, which is why he knew that being afraid does keep you alive, preparation and skill do.

Most students are void of the reality of the dangers facing them, as a military academy, VVE could not allow its students to not be aware of what they were really there for. This was Thomas’ intention. Yet Juan threw all of that out of the window.

Thomas took one more glance at Juan before mumbling some inaudible nonsense.

“Ranks will be dealt with later. For now let's deal with missions, as they are what truly set us apart from normal Vector soldiers.

Our missions are far more dangerous than normal ones. They can range from interference, espionage, assault, defence, protection, intelligence gathering etc.

I know what some of you might be thinking. How could espionage be involved with enigma beasts as they are just animals? Well that is very wrong!”

The usually cool and calm Thomas slammed his seemingly delicate hands on the desk in front of him.

“Enigma not only helped animals evolve their bodies, it also evolved their minds, creating creatures with intellectual capabilities equal to or superior to human beings.

Before enigma came, it was precisely our intelligence that allowed us to dominate the world, now that advantage has been taken from us, we are now on the same level as those beasts. Foolishly assuming you are superior simply because you are human will only lead to one outcome: death.”

Once more Thomas’ words stirred up the hearts of the students. Who among these nobles was not a talent? Who among these nobles was not arrogant? Thus it came as no surprise that Thomas’ words made them feel very uncomfortable, but they came from Thomas Thomas himself. The man was a living legend, and each of his teachings were worth their weight in gold.

Juan on the other hand nodded with knowing look on his face, making him seem far more mature than he appeared to be. Thomas massaged his temple when saw this but he carried on.

“Missions are often taken on with your Mission Parter. Some of the more dangerous missions might require a whole squad of two man cells. It all depends on the situation.

Nevertheless, we are Beta users. We are the heart of Vector. Why is this? Because we carry the key to winning any war between sentient life! Information!

Long range communication, scouting, interference, transport, none of the aforementioned and more would be possible without Beta users. Among the enigma beasts are many capable of rendering technology useless. Thus Beta users are indispensable!

Of all 4 types, Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Sigma. Us Beta users are the rarest except for Sigma users. Even among Sigma users, those who's ability primarily uses Beta powers are the rarest. What does this mean? It means each and every person in this room is the rarest of the rarest among all enigma users in the world.”

All the students in the room could not help but show the pride on their faces when they heard this. Even Juan was no exception this time. It was unknown why, but Beta users were far less in number than the other users.

Alpha users use enigma within the body. Beta users use enigma from their minds and Gamma users use enigma from the environment. Sigma users combine two or more types of energies. But among all Sigma users there will always be an energy that is dominant among those involved.

Take Juan for example. He is a Sigma user that uses both Beta and Alpha energies. But his Beta energy far surpasses his Alpha energy. Just like how all humans are born with two hands but one will become more dominant than the other.

Within Sigma users, the most dominant energy is referred to as the Omega energy. In other words, Juan's Omega is Beta energy. Every member of Vector's Edge is a sigma user, and every student in Juan's class is a person with Beta as their Omega. Thus Thomas was not exaggerating when he called them the rarest of the rare.

“Beta users are the core of any team. The think tanks, the strategists. We are usually born with superior IQs, thus we make the best tacticians. However we also have a weak point, and that is among all types we have the weakest bodies, and thus require the most protection.

Over 99.99 percent of Sigma users with Beta as their Omega use a combination of Beta and Gamma. These are slightly better at protecting themselves from physical harm than normal Beta users. They also have an incredible long range damage output. However there are Sigma users that have a Beta Omega yet still have an impressive defence, and these make up the last 0.01 percent.

They are the rarest or the rarest of the rarest. They are Sigma users with an Beta Omega and Alpha as their secondary energy. Are there any such users in this class?”

Thomas did not expect anyone to respond in this classes, because someone born with such a combination of energies was too rare. To say they comprised 0.01 percent of Beta Omega users was a conservative estimate. In the last 30 years there has not been as single student in Vector's Edge with such a combination.

Such Beta users were incredibly unique. Usually Beta users have frail bodies, thus they often need to be patterned up with someone who is very good at defense, as most Beta users are skilled at offense and support. However a Beta Omega with Alpha as their secondary energy would not need that. They would not have a frail body. They would be skilled in offense, defense and support. Such a thing was very rare.

Thomas did not have his hopes up, but then a miracle occurred. Juan's hand was up!
