When Thana got back to the Academy, Amy was waiting. “Welcome back.” Her eyes drifted down to the bundle in Thana’s arms. “Hello there.”
Daniel squirmed in his sleep, smuggling closer to his sister.
Amy waggled her eyebrow. “Maybe next time you could bring a kid who’s a little older.”
“He’s not staying.” Thana explained. “I promised to take care of him myself.”
A girl bounded up behind Amy and looked over her shoulder at the baby. “What a cutie!” She mimed grabbing him. “I want one.”
Amy lightly shoved the girl away. “Okay, okay.” She gave Thana an apologetic look. “Please excuse my sister. She’s a bit of a baby herself.”
For the first time, Thana noticed the girl’s hair. While it was clearly brown, not black, she had the same gold streak as Amy. They were so different, it was hard to believe they were related.
“Caitlyn.” Amy continued. “Why don’t you go find Luke? He wanted to see Thana when she returned.”
“On it!” Caitlyn stood at attention and gave a salute, then ran off.
“I guess most students here are related.” Thana mused. She’d have to read up on her mythology.
But Amy wasn’t smiling. “Most.” She agreed. “Caitlyn’s a child of Hephaestus.” She wrapped her arms around herself. “We have the same mom.”
It took a few second, but Thana finally understood. “You’re mortal.” She guessed. “But, you’re the oracle?”
“I have a gift.” Amy shook her head. “But, yeah, I’m not a Godchild.”
“Godchild?” The term threw Thana. “Don’t you mean Demigod?”
Amy chuckled. “Sure. But at the Academy, we say Godchild.” She looked around the grounds. “Not everyone is half-human.” She continued. “Luke is half-satyr. That’s why he can smell the difference between Godchildren and mortals.”
Thana got an idea. “Think he could teach me that? I’d be able to screen the foster kids.”
Amy nodded thoughtfully. “That’s a good idea. We should bring it up with Luke. Of course, you’ll also need to run it past Hestia.” She took hold of Thana’s arm. “Come on. I know two kids who really want to see you.”
Thana smiled and allowed herself to be leg into the cafeteria. The room was huge, with multiple levels and hundreds of tables. Amy led the way to the table where Luke, Zain, Abigail, and a girl Thana assumed was Eliza sat eating pasta and garlic bread. Eliza had Oliver propped up on her lap. There was an empty bottle beside her plate.
“Hannah!” Abigail called when she saw Thana.
Thana brought a finger to her lips and pointed at Daniel in her arms. Abigail clasped both hands over her mouth, but an excited squeal escaped.
“Welcome back.” Zain greeted her. “I presume the quest was a success.”
“Huge.” Thana pulled the picture of her parents from her pocket and showed it around the table.
“You’re dad’s kinda hot.” Eliza joked.
“No kidding.” Zain agreed. He blushed and cleared his throat. “It’s a nice picture.”
Oliver burped and they laughed. Abigail told Thana all about the school, pointing out all the students she thought were super cool.
After dinner, Luke and Thana paid a visit to Hestia. For a Goddess, she was super welcoming and easy to talk to. She agreed that Thana working the foster system would be a good idea and graduated Luke from being a student to being her teacher.
But as calm as the school was, Thana couldn’t relax. In her coming here, she’d set in motion Amy’s prophecy. She didn’t know much about prophecies, but she knew they were usually warnings.
The child of Olympus. The thought to herself as she and Luke left the school. But which child? The school is full of Godchildren.
