After the bloodcurdling scream had subsided, the life in the forest seem to return back to normal very quickly. An owl hooted in the distance and some birds who were up very late chirped too, maybe good-nights to each other and the fluttered off. Wind started rustling the leaves too as if it had been shocked by the events and paused for a while.
An animal with light brown fur was laying in the undergrowth motionless and eyes closed. It breathed calmly almost as if it was sleeping. A sound of a small animal rustling in the grass made a pointed ear to twitch and slowly the animal opened its silverish blue eyes. Everything looked bright and clear, very vivid despite the dim lighting in the forest. All the sounds were so loud, all the smells so strong. This weird new sensation almost overwhelmed the wolf.
Slowly and clumsily the brown wolf stood up. It stood still legs spread like a new born deer getting up for the first time. For a moment it stood there, looked around and sniffed the chilly air, trying to get used to the weird feeling of four legs and a tail trailing behind.
But then the wolf caught a familiar scent. On the ground there were pieces of clothing, that seemed to have been torn apart. They smelled weirdly familiar and the wolf spent a good while going through the pieces of fabric, tossing them around and even chewing on some of them. They tasted bad.
“Em! Em where are you? Answer us please?” A sudden voice alerted the wolf and it lifted its head from the rags quickly, a big piece of what used to be a shirt still in its mouth. Its whole body tensed up and ears perked up when it stared to the direction of the voice.
“Em? Please answer us!” The voice was coming closer. A female voice. The wold sniffed the air and could also smell the female now. There was a male scent mixed with it as well. Two scents heading the wolf's way.
The wolf was unsure of what to do. Running away would be a smart idea but on the other hand, the voices and the scents intrigued it. Staying felt tempting.
“Em, darling!” the female shouted sounding desperate.
“Em. Come on. Answer us now!” the male joined in now and had an angry tone in his voice.
Before the wolf could properly react, the two of them appeared behind the trees and bushes and stopped suddenly when seeing the wolf.
The wolf stared at them. Two humans, standing there looking shocked, stared back. Both of them were pale, the female trembled and smelled of fear. Then it suddenly started screaming.
“Nooo! Look, at that Albert. Those are Em's clothes!” the female screamed.
The wolf dropped the piece of fabric and growled in response and made the female jump.
“D..did it eat her?” the female screamed then clinging on the male. “Is Em d..dead?”
“I doubt it sweetie,” the male replied quietly staring at the wolf's blue eyes. “There's no blood here and I doubt it would've taken her anywhere else.”
That just made the female scream louder and now she also started sobbing against the male's arm.
The wolf was starting to feel uneasy and agitated. This screaming lady was getting on its nerves more and more. The wolf lowered its head and growled louder.
Then a long melancholy howl echoed in the night. A lone wolf's song at the moon.
The brown wolf immediately turned its head towards the sound and the raised its head towards the dark night sky to respond with a similar howl.
“Sweetie, come on. We're getting out of here now,” the male whispered and dragged the female with her. They ran away as fast as they could but the wolf didn't really care. The origin of this other howl interested it much more. And it was just happy that the screaming human went away.
Slowly it took few steps to the direction where the howl came from. The first steps were a bit fumbling as the wolf tried to understand how the legs worked but soon it got the gist of walking. And when another howl resounded in the quiet night, the brown wolf hastened its steps and soon ran as fast as it could, jumping over fallen tree branches and small rocks. The call from its kind was compelling, it must be answered and the source must be found.
After a while the wolf slowed down. It could sense someone near even though it couldn't see anything. It stood still and pretty soon there was some rustling in the bushes. The wolf was alert and reserved but also curious when it stared in the bushes. First, a dark muzzle appeared from the bush and then a pair of yellow eyes. Finally the whole wolf, a male with grey fur stepped in front of the brown wolf.
The brown wolf winced. This grey one was familiar somehow. It recognized those yellow eyes. That grey silky fur. The grey wolf walked confidently closer. Its tail wagged slowly from one side to another. 'Everything is alright,' it signaled. 'Nothing to worry about.'
The grey wolf stopped only a few centimeters away. The brown wolf was reserved but didn't back off. Yellow eyes stared into blue ones and then the grey gently nuzzled the brown female's cheek and neck. The brown did the same and soon the two wolves were pressed against each other, standing side by side. The grey wolf groaned, sounding very satisfied and happy. The brown wolf responded by nuzzling grey's cheek again. It was happy too. In a weird way, the brown wolf knew that it'd belong with the grey one. This was safe and warm and nice. This was meant to be, clearly.
Then suddenly the grey wolf jumped away and started circling the brown wolf. The brown looked confused what its new friend was doing. The grey jumped again with its front pressed against the ground, butt high up and tail wagging. The wolf barked and then jumped again, challenging the brown one to a play.
It took few attempts before the brown one understood what it was asked to do. It jumped towards the grey one who then jumped away tail high up mouth in a wide grin as if it was laughing. The brown jumped again and managed to catch the end of the grey wolf's tail. Gently the brown pulled the tail and the ran few meters away to avoid a possible retaliation from the grey.
The grey bounced forward and bumped straight into its new friend. Both wolves stumbled on ground as a one tangled mess of fur and legs. The brown wolf let a dissatisfied groan and tried to escape from under the grey wolf.
Hastily the male got up, stepping few times on the brown one and causing more groans that weren't really angry more like playful complaining. The brown one shook itself and soon the play continued.
After a few more minutes the grey wolf stopped. Even though this was fun, it wasn't going to spend all night just playing here. It looked at the brown one signaling that it was about to leave and giving a chance to come or stay. For a few seconds the brown hesitated, like something was holding it back, asking it to go back. It thought about those smelling pieces of fabric on the ground that had smelled nice and familiar. That feeling was almost as strong as the feeling it got from being with the grey wolf, maybe even stronger. But when the grey wolf groaned and started heading to opposite direction that feeling disappeared. Brown hurried after the male, not looking back.
Two wolves disappeared in the dead of the night.
