Within the SIS, Sophia was often considered as a prodigy, she excelled both in the art of divination and for fighting magic. She had solved a large number of solo investigations with remarkable effectiveness. She was the most successful field agent and many said she didn't need a partner.
This is the reason why, the surprise had been general when a few weeks earlier; she had asked that Catherina be assigned to the unit as her partner.
She herself did not know why she asked for it but when she met this girl, she felt her huge potential, but also, she felt a kind of compatibility between them... And perhaps, she wanted to break with this deep solitude that only amnesiacs know...
When she regained consciousness, she was told that she had been in a coma for several years after an accident, one morning she disappeared from the hospital and was found lying on the cathedral floor a few days later. Some had then shouted at the miracle... She had then been offered to live with her grandparents but she declined this proposal. For 3 years, and despite her efforts, she was unable to integrate into this family which was supposed to be hers, who spoke to her about things she was supposed to have experienced and with whom she had less and less contact. Same thing for her so-called friends, she shared nothing with.
She was dreaming of regaining her memories, dreaming of finally being able to find a normal life.
She already returned several times to this cathedral where she had been found one morning, weakened, lost, amnesiac... But she never found the courage to use her powers, to probe the place, to look for memories, because more than everything, she was afraid... She feared to discover what had caused her state... But today, it was different, this fear had disappeared, the images she had collected these last two days during the investigation had convinced her to try the experiment.
She arrived very early this morning, at a time when she could be alone in the cathedral. She first walked through the area nervously, and then returned to the exact place where she woke up three years earlier. There, she closed her eyes, letting the energy of the place leech into her body, feeling it deeply. Then, in the darkness of her mind, images appeared, at first blurred and fragmented, they were slowly taking shape, little by little until being rather clear but seeing was not enough to understand them.
She saw faces, but none she could recognize, silhouettes in black togas, a woman holding what seemed to be a dagger or rather a sword, another, blond, covered with black lines snaking on her skin and finally, that cold look, those red and piercing eyes freezing her blood... Ultimately everything sank into darkness.
Her right knee touched the ground, she had lost her balance, she felt sick, nauseous, a taste of blood in her mouth, she took a few minutes to recover.
What she had just done was a perilous exercise, called brain doping, which involves using the energy of the place to stimulate her own brain and revive the memories associated with it. By doing so, she had solicited her nerve cells so much that they were put in over-revving. In this state, if energy is poorly controlled, the overload can cause brain damage.
Sophia usually never used this technique, preferring psychometry, far less dangerous, this technique consists simply in reading the main energies imprisoned in a place or an object. In 95% of the cases, it was sufficient but in this precise case, she needed to reach old and deeply buried information that psychometry would not be enough to extract, moreover each reading consumes the residual energies that is why she needed a method which would be effective on the first blow.
The few images she had seen were not enough to trigger her memory and she began to doubt that she would ever be able to return to a normal life.
But sinking into despair would be of any use to her and she knew it, that's why she had to go ahead, to cheer up herself reminding that after all, even if she had no past, she could build herself a future.
- Well, I better get back to work because otherwise Cat will end up getting better than me.
She had spoken these words aloud, somehow to convince herself that work would be her salvation, her bridge to the future. This small sentence was also revealing the esteem she had for her partner, because she had indeed seen in this young novice an enormous potential that she had the firm intention to help her develop to the maximum, but of course, her pride forced her to remain the best and that would certainly not be without some efforts in the more or less long term...
- Lieutenant!
Sophia immediately recognized the voice that called out to her, she smiled:
- Well… Speaking of the devil...
Catherina approached with a smile on her face, as usual. She was a very positive, persevering girl, but a bit of a head in the air. She had immediately made him think of a fearless young cat who discovers the world, makes efforts to reach high points but quickly realizes that he does not know how to go back down. Also, the diminutive of "Cat" was immediately imposed.
- Hi Cat!
- I've just been informed that another murder was reported, Captain Morales is already on his way, and we have to meet him on the crime scene. »
Sophia stared at Cat, her fists screwed to her hips, taking a malicious pleasure in simulating irritation.
Cat immediately understood the problem and stuttered again, destabilized by the look of her partner.
- So... Sophia, not lieutenant... I'm sorry...
Sophia gave her a radiant smile, inviting her to speak, what she did immediately, telling her all the details that she already gathered.
Once done, Sophia replied on a playful tone:
- Perfect! That is the opportunity for you to show me how you interrogate a corpse...
