Just as I start heading home I pull out my cell-phone to see what time it is.4:50 I read as I flip my cellphone open.
What?
A new message..
It's from Kenji,
"I can't wait until tomorrow, can't you tell me about it today"
I guess I have no choice.
"Fine"—
"I'm at Sakura Park, meet me there and I guess I can tell you about it"
I close the cell phone after I press send and sit on a nearby bench.I expected Kenji to be late showing up as usual—Not even five minutes later he's already here.
"Did you run all the way here?" I say to Kenji.
"I kind of missed the bus to come here"
"It was a last minute thing" he says.
If you don't know the train-station is very close to Sakura Park.Kenji takes a seat on the bench right beside me.
"It's almost like Aya is a princess, don't you think—Keito?"
"You think so?" I ask
"Uhmm hmm, she handles situations so carefully"
"I wonder if she has good grades as well—then she'll be the perfect type"
"Perfect type?"
"Think Yamato Nadeshiko but with perfect grades"
"When you meet her one on one it's a bit different"
"She seems really outgoing and confident when she's in a group, and you wouldn't notice it—"
"She's shy and a little reserved if you talk to her one on one"
“At least to me she is”
"But it's pure coincidence that I was the first one to meet her today"
[...]
A minute passes by.
"What are you doing?"
I look at Kenji, seeing he has his cellphone open.
"I'm writing about Aya" He responds.
"A diary?" I ask
"No, I'm writing what I know about Aya"
"Isn't that kind of creepy?" I question him.
"No, I've been doing this sort of thing for all the girls I've liked"
"It's how you win at a bishoujo game" Kenji says.
"A bishoujo game?—figures it'd be you to think of this"
"Kenji—you never cease to surprise me"
(I want to remind Kenji that life is not a bishoujo game but I know it wouldn't make a difference to convince someone like Kenji)
"We have a test next week"
"Ahh yeah... test"
"What? another test?—sensei's definitely trying to work me to death"
Kenji closes his cellphone and puts it back into his pocket.
Kenji stretches his arms, "Keito—"
"What's it, Kenji?"
"You and me should make a pact"
"A pact?"
"Yeah—that by the end of this year you, and me will get a girlfriend"—
"If we don't, we both drop out of school together."
"That's kind of harsh don't you think?" I say—
"I mean my dad would kill me if I dropped out of school."
"Your dad's halfway around the world, besides do you think you can't get a girlfriend?" Kenji says.
"Of course I can"
"Sigh"—"Fine—you convinced me"
Kenji flashes back a smug grin— then looking in a bit of a panic as he checks his cellphone.
"I better get going or I'm going to miss the next bus" Kenji says back.
"See ya tomorrow, Keito" He says.
"See ya"
