Catherina was slowly emerging from her torpor; this little nap had been quite refreshing. The physical fatigue caused by repeated psychometrics had completely disappeared.
When they arrived at the crime scene a little earlier, the forensic police was already working to recover anything that could be scientifically analysed. So they had stood aside so as not to attract attention and had also set to work.
Although their technique of investigation was absolutely not scientific, it involved method and rigour, which is why they were based on a clearly defined five-step diagram: First: Immerse themselves in the place and its energy, second: locate the residual energies linked to the wizards' interventions. In a third step, psychometrics were performed at each of the strategic points in order to trigger visions linked to the events, which sometimes made it possible to reconstruct the scene, identify the perpetrators or establish a link between the aggressor and the victim. Then, they try to get more accurate visions by using objects related to the victim or murderer. And finally, practice "interrogation", that is, the psychometry of the corpse itself.
Very often, only the last two stages bring conclusive elements but the first three remain fundamental because they make it possible to become familiar with the energies in presence and thus to obtain more relevant information thereafter. The main issue with psychometrics is that the energy fades rapidly, so it is important to analyse the crime scene as early and efficiently as possible. Performing psychometrics also accelerates this dissipation. It is also not recommended that two people practice this exercise at the same time because it disrupts the energies present.
Despite this phenomenon, Sophia insisted that Cat go first, but in view of the results obtained, she felt like she wasted energy for nothing. The visions she had seen were, for most of them, blurred and inconsistent. The only thing certain was that there were three different energies at the scene. Although she could connect the weakest energy to the victim. Only the examination of the body had given her clear visions in which she had seen the victim transformed into a spider woman and a wall of flames.
Sophia, for her part, got much better results. She had first discovered that the victim had committed a first murder before being burned alive. She had also seen a third wizard put out the fire. She even managed to identify the latter as Lilian, the legendary witch. The difference in level was obvious.
According to Sophia, Cat's main problem was regulating her energy flow properly, which meant that her magic tended to get out of control or, on the contrary, to dissipate.
She got out of the car to stretch her legs a little. After walking a few minutes on a delimited path through the forest, she decided to get out of the path so as to hide herself from potential bystanders. She wanted to practice regulating her flow and for that, the best exercise was one of the fundamentals of magic, it consists in generating a luminous sphere and varying its size and intensity.
Creating this sphere did not pose any problem to her, on the other hand was much more difficult to maintain it, each time, it exploded after only a few seconds or even worse, extinguished immediately.
After about twelve unsuccessful attempts, she began to lose patience and the more she tried, the less she succeeded.
After another attempt during which her hand almost caught fire, she sat down on a stump, raging after her own incompetence.
- I'm really the worse!
As soon as she had said these words, a voice behind her replied:
- Don't say that, come on, it's just a little adjustment problem...
Catherina, surprised, turned around to face a young woman standing behind her.
Cat felt no animosity from the stranger, but she could feel her immense power. She was very beautiful, about one meter and seventy centimetres tall, a face cut right from the pages of a men's magazine, pink hair with the tips curled on her ivory face, she had beautiful red eyes giving her a mischievous look.
The stranger approached her with a smile on her face, she was dressed in a white dress most likely inspired of Greek togas with open shoulders and a deep neckline. Around her neck shone a huge ruby mounted on a silver necklace.
Before Cat could say anything, the stranger put her hand behind Cat's back and invited her to try again:
- Go ahead, try again, I'll regulate your flow...
Cat tried for a moment to protest, but the stranger immediately scolded her gently, as if she was the mother of a capricious child.
- No no no! no arguing! Focus and visualize what you want to achieve.
Cat resigned herself, she closed her eyes and concentrated, this hand placed in her back, directly on her skin reassured her, she felt that she could manage where she failed so many times a few minutes ago. Without even realizing it, the ball of light appeared in her hands. Her energy circulated freely in her body and even with her eyes closed, she could see it. She let herself be rocked by the voice of the stranger who whispered her instructions in the hollow of her ear.
- Your energy is now stable; you can handle it as you please. I will gradually release my energy; do your best to compensate as I go...
- Very well, now, slowly, gradually, reduce your energy until it disappears, the luminous sphere must decrease in intensity without exploding...
- That's it, very slowly...
Cat visualized the energy, twice she felt the hand press into her back and the energy adjusted. But gradually, she managed to reduce it, until it disappeared.
When she opened her eyes, she could not help but let her joy explode, she thanked the stranger warmly several times. Then the stranger turned her heels and gave her one last piece of advice
- Remember what you've just done, keep practicing and you'll be able to handle any basic spell.
Cat tried to hold her back, but she vanished with a mysterious goodbye note.
- See you soon young red virgin…
Cat stayed puzzled for a moment thinking about this meeting and this strange nickname "red virgin", what could be the meaning of all this...
