A heavy, burning sensation stung Mackenzie's eyes as she tried to open them. It was no use. She couldn't open them. The sound of a crackling fire filled her ears as the heat from it warmed her skin. In the background, she could hear the faint mummer of two voices arguing in the background.
"She could have gotten seriously hurt. Who ever this vampire is must have used Evie as a distraction." An unfamiliar voice said, sounding frustrated. The sound of his footsteps paced the room, then stopped. "Isaac we need to have our wits about us. We don't know who this new vampire is and for all we know, Thomas could be working with them. I mean, he is the one who had Evie go out last night."
"Then I have to tell her I can't be with her before our friendship turns into something more. If she ever got hurt-" Isaac began, but the unfamiliar person cut him off.
"That's how Thomas wants you to think. He wants you to be unhappy! You can't let him win."
"If she stays around me, either Thomas will kill her or this new vampire will get to her. She's not safe around me."
"She needs you. Evie had nothing to do with vampires and look at her now. Mackenzie isn't getting out of this mess and neither are we, so you're just going to have to stick with her."
Silence fell among the two as a sigh left Isaac mouth. He never intended for Mackenzie to get caught up in this sort of drama, but when he first spoke to her, it was like an invitation to all the consequences that came with being friends with a vampire.
"Look Andrew, I don't know what to do! I've tried to make things right with him, but he just won't listen. He's promised me an eternity of torture and that's what he's giving me." Isaac said. He was asking about Thomas
There was a sigh of anger. Then the room fell silent again.
"We need to kill him." Andrew said. "If it means having one less danger in Mackenzie's life, then that's what we'll do."
"What?! That'll just make us as bad as him!"
"Killing one life to save 100s other is worth it Isaac. Think about the amount of lives you'll save, including Mackenzie's."
The room fell silent once more. Mackenzie could hear footsteps getting closer to where she was lying.
"Let's not act so quickly. We'll think things over and come up with a plan that will do minimum damage." Isaac said.
Mackenzie's hand was taken up by another and she slowly opened her eyes to see who is was. It was Isaac. She lay on the grey sofa in Isaac's living room. The room was dimly lit by the flames of the fire and an unknown man stood at the other end of the living room, carefully watching Mackenzie and Isaac.
She blinked her eyes a few times, clearing her vision. Then pulled herself up, so that she was sitting.
"Hey." Isaac smiled, letting go of her hand.
All the memories of what happened, flooded through her mind. Josh was bitten....and so was she! She touched the skin on her neck.
"Am..am I a Vampire?" Mackenzie asked in fear. Her voice barely coming out as a whisper.
Isaac shook his head, as he placed his hand on Mackenzie's knee.
"But how? Evie bit me." She stated.
"If you drink a Vampires blood minutes after being bitten, it stops the venom from spreading." Isaac explained.
"What about Josh? Is he okay?"
Isaac looked down, making Mackenzie's heart sink
"I'm sorry." He sighed.
The memories from last night were vague but she remembered being bitten. She also remembered Josh getting hurt, but didn't think it was so serious. The stranger that stood watching the two, disappeared into the kitchen while Mackenzie continued asking questions.
"And what about Evie? You snapped her neck." Mackenzie staid.
"She's a vampire Kenzie, she cant die from something as simple as a snapped neck." Isaac chuckled. "It just knocked her out."
Mackenzie looked up to see the man returning with a glass of water. He had brown hair and a stubble . He wore a faded red checked shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a pair of jeans with black boots. He looked to be in his late thirties, old enough to be Isaacs father.
"It's lovely to finally meet you Mackenzie. I'm Andrew." He said, handing Mackenzie the glass of water he was holding.
So this was the man that took car of Isaac after he turned. A smile fell onto Mackenzie's lips as she took the glass from Andrew.
"Thank you. It's lovely to meet you too Andrew." Mackenzie smiled.
Mackenzie took a sip of the water and it soothed the burning feeling in her throat. She hadn't noticed it until now because her mind was so occupied. She rubbed her throat as if that would magically make the pain disappear.
"My throat feels like it's on fire." Mackenzie admitted.
"That's the perks of drinking vampire blood." Isaac chuckled.
Andrew looked up towards the front door as he heard a car pull into their driveway. A car door slammed shut and the crunching sound of footsteps against the gravel driveway got closer to the house. Andrew slowly made his way to the door. Then a light knock was heard.
While Andrew answered the door, Isaac and Mackenzie sat in silence staring into the fire.
"So what now?" Mackenzie asked, breaking the silence.
Isaac started into the fire, forming an answer in his head.
"We make sure you stay safe and we help Evie to control her thirst." Isaac said, nodding as if to reassure himself.
Suddenly, Grace came walking in with Andrew. Relief washed over her as she seen Mackenzie looking a lot more healthier than she did last night.
Last night she had to text Jason from Mackenzie's phone, telling him that she was staying at Graces house for a sleepover. All Grace had to do now, was hope that Jason didn't bring it up to her mum.
"I'll make you some breakfast." Isaac said to Mackenzie. He got up from the sofa and stopped himself before leaving for the kitchen. "Have you had breakfast Grace?" He asked.
"No. But it's okay, I'm going to grab something to eat later." Grace smiled.
"I'll cook you something up here with Mackenzie's breakfast. Don't worry." He smiled, leaving the living room.
Grace sat down next to Mackenzie. Last night, Grace thought she had lost Mackenzie forever. That gut wrenching feeling of lost made her appreciate her friendship with Mackenzie just that little bit more and she vowed to cherish every moment they spent together for now on.
"How do you feel?" Grace asked.
"My throat feels like it's on fire, my body's aching and my heads a little dizzy." Mackenzie laughed. "Isaac said its all from drinking vampire blood"
"I was so worried about you. I told your dad that you stayed at my house last night so you might want to call him." Grace suggested.
Mackenzie had forgotten all about her dad. He was probably worried sick! She took her phone that was sitting on the coffee table and called her dad. He instantly picked up.
"Hey Kenzie, are you alright?" Jason answered.
"Yeah. I was just calling you to let you know that I'm safe."
"Are you not going to school today?" He asked.
Mackenzie looked at the clock. It was already 9!
"Ah yeah we're just running a little late." Mackenzie nervously chuckled.
"Alright, well just stay safe. I have to go so I'll talk to you later."
"Okay dad, see you later." Mackenzie said, hanging up.
She let out a deep, shaky breath, realising that she had been holding her breath.
As Mackenzie sunk down into the seat, Isaac came waltzing out of the kitchen with two plates.
"Breakfast is served." Isaac jokingly said, handing Mackenzie and Grace their breakfast.
"Thank you so much." Mackenzie said, looking down at the food.
Her mouth watered at the smell. He had made them pancakes with strawberries, Blueberries and Raspberries, with syrup drizzled over the top. She immediately dug into her food, quietening the cries of her stomach for food.
Isaac sat down on the arm chair next to the fire and watched Mackenzie as she ate, laughing at how fast she was eating.
She looked up from her food as Isaac laughed at her.
"Aren't you going to eat?" She asked.
"Nah. Not really in the mood for food." Isaac smiled.
Andrew came into the living room and sat on the other armchair. He reached across and handed Isaac a small glass which contained a red liquid. Blood.
Mackenzie watched as Isaac took small sips of the blood, savouring every drop.
"So what about Evie?" Grace asked, drawing Mackenzie's attention away from the blood Isaac was drinking.
"We're keeping her locked in one of the bedrooms for now and just giving her blood at regular intervals. That should help regulate her feeding pattern, rather than just feeding her whenever she feels hungry." Andrew explained.
Mackenzie thought about what Freddie would do right now if he was here. She new for a fact that he would try to stay optimistic. Evie would eventually be back to her normal self and they would all figure out a way to stop Thomas.
Everyone sat in silence as they ate they're food. All that could be heard was the blazing fire in the background and the sound of the grandfather clock, ticking from the other side of the living room.
"Can I see Evie?" Mackenzie asked, finishing her breakfast.
Andrew glanced over at Isaac who didn't seem to like the idea.
"As long as I can stay in the room with you." Isaac said.
"That's okay." Mackenzie smiled.
"Here, I'll take your plate." Andrew said, taking Mackenzie's plate.
"Thanks" Mackenzie said, handing her plate to Andrew.
She followed Isaac upstairs. Upstairs was just as pretty as downstairs. There were so many rooms! The floor was dark and wooden and the walls were cream. Against one side of the wall was a decorative tree and a glass table that had a bunch of flowers sitting in a circular, glass vase.
"Just down here." Isaac said as he lead Mackenzie further down the hall.
They got to the end of the hall and Isaac knocked on the door.
"Come in." Mackenzie heard Evie say from behind the door.
Isaac pulled out an old looking key from his jeans back pocket and unlocked the door. Mackenzie stood behind Isaac, as fear began to grow inside her. She wanted to trust Evie, but she just couldn't. Not yet anyway.
"You ready?" He asked.
Mackenzie nodded her head, knowing that if she waited any longer, she would talk herself out of doing this.
