Alison walked into the town hall, in no mood to be dealing with the police department. She was stuck in this world, for better or worse. So far, it seemed to be getting worse. Chester followed her, curious to see what she would do. Not many people would stand up to Sheriff Hewtyr.
She walked up to the office, hardly noticing Deputy Evan White sitting across the hall. Without hesitation, she pounded on the door, startling Evan and Chester.
"What are you doing?" Chester hissed, wondering if this was a good plan after all. Alison shot him a look as Evan stood beside her, hoping to curb his father's wrath.
"Come out!" Alison shouted, pounding again. This time the sheriff opened the door a bit.
"Well well well," he grumbled, less than excited to see her. "I guess you're here to help clean up grandpa's mess."
"Not in the slightest. All I know is if you leave, then Frederick can go home. Then I can at least stay somewhere to get some sleep. You can fight all night long, but the house keys are in the office," Alison informed, folding her arms. It was silent for a few moments before the sheriff sighed and opened the door. "What are you doing in here, anyway? This seems childish, especially for a sheriff."
"I needed to find the financial records so I can help him balance it. If we don't get more funding for the police department, then I'm afraid that we'll have to lay off officers," Hewtyr explained. Alison raised an eyebrow, surprised that he was doing it for such a noble cause. Evan followed into the room, where Chester decided to wait in the hall to escort Alison back.
"Have you found them?" Alison continued as the sheriff searched for keys in the desk. "Mr. Hewtyr?"
"Madson, please," he grinned, handing her the house keys. "And not quite. I would wait to put out a warrant, but I'm sure the queen would understand my sense of urgency."
"The queen doesn't need about this, does she?" Alison rephrased.
"Exactly. The feud between Charwell and I isn't something someone can just erase or mediate," Madson explained. Alison shrugged as she took the keys. All she wanted to do was to go lay down somewhere and sleep. Preferably somewhere safe and secure.
"Look, what you and my grandfather have is between you two. Just because I'm related to him doesn't mean I share his feud with you. I would prefer to stay out of it, and hopefully have a better relationship with the police than he has," Alison replied, hoping to stay out of any fights or arguments in the future. Madson smiled.
"Likewise, although I am surprised that you're taking a neutral stance on this. Isn't he family?"
"Technically, I met you first, meaning that I've known you longer. Even if we share blood, that doesn't mean that I have to share his side as well," Alison sighed. "Also, maybe don't bring Lizzy in on the feud either."
"Why would I do that?" Madson asked, surprised by the request.
"Even if we aren't directly related, she's still my sister legally. The last thing we need is to take sides."
"Agreed. I will make sure that we keep you two out of this, unless you bring yourselves into it."
"Sounds fair to me," Alison answered with a nod. She doubted that Lizzy would insert herself between the mayor and the sheriff amidst an argument.
"Wonderful! I can have Evan escort you back home, if you'd like," Madson offered as Alison realized that he had entered the office as well. However, she shook her head.
"Frederick is outside on the steps, and Chester should be out there as well. I'm sure he knows the way," Alison replied as Madson nodded.
"Fair enough. Although I would be weary of Chester. He's a part of the Mibweha clan," Madson warned, confusing Alison.
"Mebwihe?" Alison mimicked, not sure what the word meant. The sheriff grimaced and shook his head.
"Never mind. Just ask Chester if you get a moment. I think he would be best to explain," Madson suggested with a forced smile. Alison narrowed her eyes.
"Why would I ask him if you think I should be weary of him?"
"Let's just say that his clan has been caught breaking the law before," Madson informed. Alison frowned and walked away, wondering what he was talking about. Either way, it seemed like he was being rude, and she wanted to leave. Evan waved, to which she smiled back before leaving the office.
Chester was leaning against the wall when she walked out. He came up to her as she closed the door. Alison glanced towards him and noticed his pink eyes again. He smiled.
"Is there something on my face?" Chester jested, catching her stare. Alison blushed slightly before shaking her head.
"No, no, I was just noticing your eyes. They're a strange color, kinda like mine," Alison observed, making him smile wider.
"A strange color?"
"Well, no one has pink or purple eyes back home, so they're strange to me," Alison quickly replied, embarrassing herself. Chester chuckled and shook his head.
"I would imagine so. There aren't any Paka or Mibhewa clan members on Earth. At least, other than your family," Chester mentioned as Alison turned to him, surprised.
