When I visited the park, on an old bench I found an older man that he used to see whenever I came back from school. I saw him day after day, while he fed several animals from the park that approached without fear of him, but they left whenever someone else passed near the bench.
It was a cloudy day, which I left school with some doubts about what he would do in the future by questions from a teacher. I had gone to the park to try to clear my doubts and think about what I wanted for my future, and the path I wanted to follow. And while I was passing through the park, I met again the older man, who this time gave me a hand signal to approach me.
-It seems that something serious torments your young mind today, child –Said the man, while he was moving to one end of the bench to allow me to sit down-.
-My name is Alex, sir –I said-.
-And I am Andrés –He said, leaving a little more food for the animals that moved away a bit because of my presence-. In all this time, it is the first time that we speak, or not?
-I think.
-Well, I wanted to ask you: What can be tormenting your mind so seriously at this time of your youth? And do not try to deceive my old eyes, because my experiences do not betray me, and I know that something happens with you.
I thought for a moment before speaking.
-Sir, you who have lived long enough, do you know how I can live a life without regrets?
The older man had a small laugh.
-That question, my young friend, is something that varies from person to person.
-What does it mean?
-Listen carefully, child. Have you ever asked yourself why what you do every day?
- What do you mean?
-For example, why did you ask me that question, of all the possible questions you could have asked? But think well of the answer. Do not think about what brought that question to your mind; think about what you want from it.
I thought for a moment, and then I answered.
-Because I'm thinking about what I want for my future.
-And why are you thinking about what you want for your future?
I thought for a longer time, but I did not know what to answer.
-I don´t know. It's just something my teacher had talked to everyone in general, but I could not get it out of my head.
-Well, then I'll ask you another question: What do you want for your future?
-The same is the question that the professor told us all, "What do you want for your future?"
-And what did you answer?
-Many people only took it as a joke, but after school, the question kept hovering in my head.
-And have you been thinking seriously about the answer?
-Of course. But I cannot find the answer.
-Well, I think I can help you with something.
After seeing me with a small smile, the older man pulled out a small notebook from his jacket pocket and tore off a sheet. He doubled it twice, and handed me the sheet of paper in the palm of my hand, then closed my fingers on it.
-Read what this says carefully, and then think about what the right questions are, and what answers you should get. For example, why are you studying? What reason do you have to attend school? And do not think about the attendance list, but about the reason why you attend every day, and you stay there.
After saying those words, the older man got up with the support of his cane and started to walk towards the exit of the park. Before reading what the paper said, I looked closely at the park around me, and tried to clear my mind so I could reflect well on what the note might say.
