I woke up feeling groggier than ever. Immediately attacked by the bright sun, I hid under my covers in hopes of escaping its blinding clutches when I felt two hands ripping my safety blanket off, revealing my unsightly morning features to a now annoyed Payton standing over me.
“How many times must I remind you that even though the weekend has started that doesn’t mean you sleep in till noon!” My brother nagged while taking a glance over at my clock with a smirk on his face, “Kaelene…”
“What” I replied groggily attempting with all strength to stay awake.
“What were your plans this Saturday afternoon…”
“To meet up with Callisto and go shopping for the club an- OH MY GOD!”
Payton chucks over my phone and my eyes widen with horror as I look at my screen riddled with spammed messages ranging from, Hey darling I'm here! to, wtf Kae I swear if ur not here in the next ten minutes I'm going to hook you up with the next guy that walks in after you.
I better start saying my prayers! Being late for an appointment with Cal means absolute hell for the rest of the day. I pushed off the covers and shoved my brother out the way. I made my way to the kitchen and grabbed a bowl of sweet cereal and heaved them down my throat, along with the leftover milk now coating my mouth with sugar. Rushing into the bathroom and pulling my hair back with mounds of hairspray into a high pony while I squirted a heap of toothpaste to my toothbrush and began brushing the leftover flakes out of my teeth.
"Damn, no shower sis? That's beyond unhygienic, even for you." Payton grimaced, standing in the doorway watching with apparent amusement.
"Shut up!" I snapped back applying a light base of foundation and shaded dark pigment across my eyebrows giving them a cleaner appearance.
Pulling my shirt over my head and pushing down my bottoms was Payton's cue to leave as he turned around and left for his room leaving me with a few moments of peace. I gathered an outfit consisting of a long sleeve striped top with a simple skirt, and old converse sneakers to pull the look together. I stood satisfied in front of the bathroom mirror relived I wouldn't have to hear a certain diva complaining about the lazy style I wear half the time, this was one of the days I enjoyed Girling up a bit despite my slightly boyish attitude. I couldn't help but adapt to the style, being raised by a brother who would give me his old clothes when I was young cause cash was hard to come by.
letting out a sigh I grabbed my phone and punched in the number of my best friend who answered the phone, surprisingly calm despite her last message.
“Hello, Kae dear I see Payton has done his job in waking you up every morning, despite you having a properly functioning alarm clock.”
"Cal, I'm sorry I swear ill be there in-"
“5 minutes.” Calisto replied sweetly and hung up as soon as she said her piece, but I couldn’t help but chuckle. Cal really can be super childish despite her appearance, but that just makes me love her more! I walked to the living room to see Payton sitting on the couch his eyes gazing over my outfit.
“Do you really have to go to the club tonight?” He sighed, “I know your nineteen, but after what happened yesterday you really want to stay out so late?”
“I'll be fine. Cal will be with me and is probably way higher on the scale when it comes to being overprotective. I'll text you if anything, like always. See ya!”
Before I could get another lecture, I whisked out of the house and grabbed my white bike that was laid near the doorway. Payton had modified the old thing last week on his free time to fit my height and thankfully so; it was perfect for zooming quickly over to the shopping plaza where Cal specified our meeting place be. locking up my bike outside the French-themed pastry shop, where I found Callisto nodding off by herself in a Lacey pink dress and nude heels sitting in the back corner of the cute shop by the window sill. Guilt ran up through me faster than ever seeing Cal sitting alone with her menu half flung off the table. The poor girl even had some cream on her cheek probably from whatever was on the empty plate in front of her. Geez, I felt so freaking bad. I quickly made my way to the seat in front of her and reached out to softly tap her, when Cal's eyes flew open and clenched my wrist.
"Too bad Kaelene, you're late by three minutes." Cal let out a puff of air before letting me go and leaning back into her chair. "It's always been rude to keep a lady waiting! I even broke my diet while waiting for you! I was that bored I let the cream puff take over my thoughts.” She whined.
"I'm sorry for making u wait Cal. I promise I'll make it up to you by wearing whatever outfit you put me in for tonight, and let you do my make up.” I grinned wide at my bestie, who in turn got the most wicked look on her face. Ugh, I can only imagine the torture she’s gonna put me through tonight.
“All is forgiven my dear friend. I really have to say though, you feel so guilty that you would let me do a complete makeover on you!? That's something I've been waiting to do for the past 19 years." She squealed in delight and I immediately regretted my choice of words. I guess that means I don’t have to suffer at the hands of Callisto the Matchmaker anymore.
"Don't think I haven't forgotten about your punishment for being late either?" the blond said grabbing her handheld mirror from her purse, wiping the slightly dried cream from her face with a bit of disdain at her blush being rubbed off.
“Come on Cal why must u always try to hook me up with guys every chance you get. I mean you have legit tried to hook me up with every guy in the English department and nothing ever worked... Guys just don’t get me, or want to, for a good reason."
"Ugh, that is not true! I choose the English department because you are in the linguistics department. I mean similar majors right? And it's not my fault you don’t give anybody a chance and always reject the second date or leave during the first. But anyway, seeing as they never work I feel really bad~ I just want you to be happy. After all, you say you don't want a man, but every so often I catch you eying couples and guys with a look of envy.” Cal continues, “Like your mouth says one thing, and your body acts a completely different way. And trust me, body language speaks louder than any form of communication."
I propped my head on my hand and leaned against the table as Cal finished the same speech she gives about finding love every time the male species comes up in a convo. I swear between her and Payton I don't know who's worse in the nagging department. “Fine! but this is the last time” I say giving a little scowl. I look past her shoulder at nothing but couples sharing strawberries covered in chocolate, or cheesecake glazed with raspberry and citrus while looking at each other with such cringe-worthy looks. Gross.
None the less I'd hate to admit my amazement at Cal's persistence. I mean at times she would set me up with four guys in one day just to find a potential suitor, though it never worked in anyone's advantages.
“You know sometimes I can be a bit pushy when it comes to your love life. But what can I say, it's kinda in my DNA to want to lure in guys… to help you of course.” Cal says reluctantly, “I just want what’s best for you, I know your super independent and want nothing do with guys… I just want to help you explore.”
I reached across the table and pet the top of my friends head. As she purred with delight I retracted my hand and said "I know, I know. I'm just not really interested in dating guys with one thing on their mind, or others who can't be bothered to accept me for me. You know I love you for trying though.” Callistos huffed out a puff of air as red rushed to her cheeks.
“As much as I like to play around with my boy toys, I'd like the same thing one day so… I won't pressure you anymore. It's your love life, and who knows when your true love will come. Perhaps in this shop.” Cal glanced around the shop filled with zero potential lovers for me and went back to checking herself out in her mirror, with a look of slight defeat in annoyance of not truly going through with her punishment.
I couldn’t help but laugh at her attempt, as I grabbed the menu on the glass and scanned the baked goods and beverages that were way out of my price range. I mean one cake was 14 bucks! “Callisto you think we can go somewhere else? It's too expensive here”
“You don’t have to worry about it I already ordered you something before you came, but it should be here by now…” Cal said looking over at a young waitress who was now reaching our table and set down a fruit parfait coated with strands of honey and a dollop of whipped cream. "This isn't what I ordered," Cal said staring at the parfait with confusion then glancing at my face as I was ready to devour the beautiful thing whole.
“Y-yes I know.” Replied the now flustered waitress, “But the young man sitting by the door insisted I switched the order… He said not to worry, and how the parfait was on him.” The young female made a shy motion with her head in the direction of the entrance, as she left me and Cal to look on to a lone man in the couple filled shop, sitting exactly where the woman has directed. And my God was he quite the sight.
In a million years I would have never thought to see another human as gorgeous as Cal. He looked to be in his early 20s and wore a black leather jacket over a clean cotton shirt, skin-tight jeans, and hair was onyx and was pulled back slightly with an elastic band allowing a few strands to escape and lightly touch his chiseled jaw. It's like everything about him was almost inhumanely perfect, beautiful even. His slightly tanned skin and deep curve of lips were touching the edge of a porcelain teacup that was held by impossibly firm but surprisingly gentle hands, and his eyes turned upward to look at the both of us and shot us a wink that would have made most girls pass out in the moment of receiving it, well too bad I'm not like most girls. I turned over to cal ignoring the patron to see her face still fixated on the man. Her face filled with complicated emotions I couldn't pinpoint.
“Cal are you ok? Do you know that guy?” I whispered grabbing her hand and urged her to look at me, and when she did Cal gave me a look of both worry and bewilderment.
“Kaelene, do I know him?!” She said in a loud whisper, while getting up out of her seat quickly and dragging me out of mine, towards the exit not even allowing a taste of the yummy snack that was placed in front of me.
“Wait- Cal, what's going on?” I got pulled up to the exit and shoved out the door before Cal's brown eyes became fixated on mine that contrasted as she hurriedly spoke.
“That is my big brother and we need to get out of here.”
