The fire was extinguished as the three students of Heisen were treated at the place of the incident, together with many other wounded people. They waited until the return of Vas, which caught up with his friends with empty hands. “The bastard was able to escape. For now, at least”, commented Vas as he sat down in the sidewalk with the others. Then, one police officer offered them a ride to the Heisen Special Defense Department. “I have received orders to take you there, so please, come this way”, announced the policeman.
It took around an hour to Sam to finish his oral report of the facts to Ms. Lorelei Wittich, who decided to take note personally on the matter, even if it wasn’t exactly her job. Sam, before going outside the office, decided to please a request Vas put on him during their way towards Heisen.
- Ms. Wittich, may I ask you a question? – he said.
- Sure, Mr. Keller, what is it? – the woman kept her gaze at the screen, tapping swiftly the keyboard.
- Usually, there are other officers that take notes of our reports… How is it that the personal secretary of the Colonel is doing this job? Maybe… that criminal is somehow a serious issue?
- There are so many serious issues here that we barely have enough personal to cover them all – answered the secretary, still her attention fixed on the holographic monitor – That’s why I’m completing the report to send it to the ordinary Police Department. They will start the investigations on the culprit, then we will be called to action after the criminal is identified.
- So… we don’t have an investigation team at the moment, right?
- We do not, indeed. At least, for the time being, our department collaborates with the police, the military or other public and private organizations, depending on the task to be performed – Just for a moment, Ms. Wittich rose her gaze to look at Sam – Now, if I pleased your curiosity, you may leave, Mr. Keller. As you can see, we’re very busy here.
- S-sure! – Sam took his leave and walked away from the SDD building.
“Man, she would be truly a beautiful woman if wasn’t for that cold attitude!”, Sam thought. “Maybe if she talked a little more to Ms. Normann she could become a little gentler!”
- So, how are you? – Sam asked to Erik, which was sitting in one of the waiting room at the Medical Department with Vas and Ste.
- I’m fine, just some bruisers here and there, nothing broken –said Erik with a tired smile – I’m pretty lucky to have a room here at Heisen, would be a pain to go back home right now!
- So, Sam, did you ask what I ask you to ask? – asked Vas.
- Yeah, I did – Sam answered – As you guessed, there isn’t an actual investigative team, lack of personal, apparently. They get support from other organizations, especially the police.
- I knew it! Then it’s decided – said excited Vas, raising from his chair.
- What’s decided? – asked Ste, his doubt shared by his companions.
- We’re going to solve this case, of course! – declared Vas.
Next Monday afternoon, after classes, Vas and co. arrived to a building filled with offices. It belonged to a famous local toy factory. The same toy factory that lost one of its branch offices the previous day. Vas entered the building with confidence, followed by Sam, Erik and Ste. There, they were received by two armed guards near to the reception desk.
- May I ask you to identify yourselves? – asked politely the guard, with a little of hostility in his voice.
- Sure, here it is! – said Vas, presenting a police-like distinctive.
- Gunther Gaertner… from Heisen, uh? – the guard read the ID that Vas presented to the guard – Aren’t you those kids studying at Heisen?
- Well, that’s half true, colleague – replied Vas with ease – I’m their tutor. I may seem young, but I’m quite older than them, as you can see in my ID. Merit of my dear Bolivian mother’s DNA. We’re here to make some questions to the company’s boss, Mr. Helmut Hauke.
- He was already interrogated by the police – contested the other guard, both of them still suspicious of the group of students – Also, the receptionists here didn’t warn us of your visit.
- We’re kind on a hurry here – said Vas, not showing any kind of hesitation – We received the full report from the police this morning, but there are still some points that doesn’t fit well, considering that this three students right here were those who fight against that criminal. We want to make sure we don’t miss anything, in order to deal fast with this weird criminal.
The two guards looked at Erik and the others, and recognizing them from the TV reportage about the incident, they were sure they weren’t lying about coming from Heisen. For that reason, they allowed the group to pass. At the reception, they asked for a meeting with the company’s president, and as a reply, they were asked to wait for some time, since he was currently on a reunion. After being guided to the waiting room, the four students were left alone until the president would be able to meet them.
- Wow, Vas, that was awesome! – Erik said, the others surprised as well – You could have win an Oscar for that!
- Haha! I know, I know, I’m way too good! – without modesty, Vas affirmed his ‘goodness’.
- Well, “Mr. Gaertner”, where did you found that ID? – asked Ste, looking with a grin at his friend.
- Hehe! I got it from an old friend of mine that is good at making things. He’s an artisan! – said Vas.
- You mean: a “falsifier”. Well, he did a pretty good to fool people not associated with the Institute – said Sam, analyzing the object in his hand.
- Artisan, falsifier, whatever – Vas took the ID from the hands of Sam, then put it again on his pocket – We’re in, now we can relax and wait for the president to call us. Ah, by the way, Erik – Vas turned his gaze at the blonde boy – Take this, is the list of questions we wrote this morning. You’ll ask the questions.
- Eh? Why me? That seems boring! – contested Erik.
- I don’t know, I just feel like having you do it. What do you think guys? - Vas asked to the other two.
- Erik is perfect for the job, we’re good with him – said Ste, his face clearly implying he was having fun.
- Indeed, only Erik can handle this without doubt! – Sam barely could stop his impulse to laugh.
- See? There you have! Three against one. That’s democracy for you! – sentenced Vas, and then he and everyone besides Erik laughed at last.
- Tch, such democracy! – Erik lamented the assigned role, but he knew he didn’t have any other option.
