The next morning after the incident in which Erik and his friends were protagonists was cloudy, certainly gloomier than the previous days. The four students that decided to carry their investigation by themselves were under Heisen’s roof, secure from the incoming rain, but not safe from the scold Miss Wittich reserved for them. For about two hours, the four students were on detention, giving a full and detailed report on what happened. After they told their part, Miss Wittich was about to dismiss the students, when Vas decided to open another discussion.
- Miss Wittich – Vas said, standing up with his eyes fixed on hers – I just want to make you know I was the one plotting all of this, and the responsibility is all mine.
- The hell are you saying? – contested Ste – We all agreed on this! If there is a punishment, I take it too!
- Me as well! – said Sam and Erik with conviction.
- Stay calm, all of you – the secretary didn’t lose her composure, then invited Vas and the others to sit down, and so they did – Each of you decided to participate in this solo mission without our consent, pretended to be authorized Heisen SDD units and stalked a young woman for a week. Tomorrow here at Heisen we will hold an important reunion. There, we will think of an appropriate penalty for all of you.
- Besides that! – Vas hurried to keep the conversation – There is a proposal that I want to make to the Special Defense Department!
- Oh? What would that be, Mr. Vasco?
- As you know pretty well, here at Heisen we have few personnel to carry out all the investigative tasks regarding cases that involves illegal use of DunkelLicht energy, right? – Vas made a pause, to test the interest of the secretary.
- Go on, please – said Wittich, quite as always.
- Well, we just demonstrated how good we were to carry out that task! We were able to find the culprit and protect the life of a civil! – pointed out Vas – So I’ll like to ask if there’s the possibility for us to participate more actively on investigative missions! Nothing too much dangerous, but I would really like to help out you guys! And I’m not the only one!
- That’s true –said Sam – We want to help the people, protecting them for those who decide to use their power for evil.
- I’m not quite the warrior of justice, but it’ll be fun to help as well – said Erik with his wide smile.
- Beating bad guys? I’m totally on it! – Ste also showed his enthusiasm on the matter.
- So, you want to be more proactive regarding our Department, am I right? – asked Wittich.
- Yes, indeed! – answered Vas.
- Well, let me tell you your proposal is pointless… – Wittich made a short pause to look at the students on by one, then continued - Because that is also already decided.
- What? – in unison, the four students remained somehow perplexed.
- It was programmed all along your participation as support units in future operations in both Germany and the rest of the world. Obviously, you don’t have the knowledge nor the skills or experience to properly carry out those tasks. If you were unharmed this time, I may said it was more luck than anything else. You’re good, but not enough. That is why we have planned the summer training camp for you. We have big expectations on you, so get ready to meet those expectations!
Miss Wittich dismissed the students with those encouraging words, which each one of them promised to themselves they would not forget.
That afternoon, at the skate park, Erik, Vas, Ste and Sam were hanging out with Erik’s friends, telling them about the end that weird story that began almost a week ago.
- Woah, no wonder you didn’t come even once here, you were pretty busy, eh? – said Simon.
- Yeah, sorry about that, Simon – Erik said - Next week we would have a lot of test, so I’ll be missing the skate park for a little longer. Then we have two weeks free before the special training, so then I’ll be coming here more often!
- By the way – Ferdinand interrupted Simon before he could say something else – How the story ends? I mean, who was really the man with the mask? And the chick really stole the designs?
- Oh, about that, I wanted to know as well – said Ste – Vas, you got that info, right?
- Yeah, I did! – said Vas, rising his chest with pride – I was able to get the info before the official announcement on the news from a chick in the Administrative Department. The investigation resulted in the man being the father of the guy we thought was the culprit. After some analysis from the remains of both the mask and the burnt house in the laboratories here at Heisen, they found traces of Brauer’s DNA, which means he died there. Considering the fact his father tried to take revenge on the designer, it was hypothesized that Brauer junior kill himself, then unstable for the loss, Brauer senior lost his mental balance, producing the explosion that burnt down their house. Then, he tried to kill the responsible for his son’s suicide. The chick after being interrogated once again by the police, at the light of all of this, had an emotional breakdown and finally confessed that she, indeed, stole those drawings, after all.
- She must feel terrible after knowing that her act caused the deaths of two people – commented Sam – She’ll be haunted for this for the rest of her life, I guess.
- Not quite the happy ending, uh? – Ste looked down to the ground, feeling a little depressed for the story.
They sat in silence for a little more, thinking about the closed case. While Vas simply felt good for being able to complete the whole story; Erik and Sam thought about the fact they couldn’t help the man who was overwhelmed by the loss of his son and the thirst for revenge; Ste didn’t feel like having enough strength to handle properly the situation, that could ended in a better way. Nonetheless, all of them thought the same thing in their hearts: “I have to become stronger!”
